After watching Glenn Beck yesterday, I was absolutely appalled. It wasn't just because Beck is an irresponsible wingnut. There was something else - something I couldn't quite put my finger on.

And then, it hit me.

Glenn Beck is using drug dealer arguments.

To be specific, Beck is trying to exonerate himself from blame by avoiding any responsibility for his own actions or words. For months, we've seen Beck working as the fearmonger-in-chief, making Lou Dobbs, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, and Rush Limbaugh look like sedate entertainers. Beck's "9/12 project" is, in one way, a call to action. But in another way, it's a call to arrogant self-pity (poor, pitiful me, no one could understand because I'm uniquely patriotic and "I just love my country.") and the worst kind of sarcasm.

Let's briefly outline Beck's argument:

1. Blaming anyone other than Poplawski is crazy.

2. I can't be responsible for other people's actions.

3. All I'm doing is providing a public service.

4. The fact that so many people share my concerns is proof that what I'm saying is very important.

5. Poplawski would have acted that way "no matter what."

6. Anyone who doesn't think the way I do is "irrational."

I think part of the reason I got upset was Beck's protests of innocence. He was like the guy who claims that he was just "holding the drugs for a friend" or the guy who says "I just gave the guy what he wanted. He would have gotten it from someone else if not from me."

Glenn Beck is talking, thinking, and acting like a drug dealer. The mind-altering substances he's dealing are his words, which are designed to skew people's sense of reality, make them delusional, and incite fear and anger. Beck might not "try from his own supply", but he knows exactly how to pull on the heartstrings and he's zeroing in on disgruntled working-class Americans who have given up hope that democracy can work for them.

I suffer through shows like becks and oreily's and occasionally hannity once in a while to bone up on the enemy. I don't think taking in "news" that one might find objectionable or even clearly lies is a reason to change the channel. It depends on why you are there. I guess some people only listen to or watch what they already agree with.

I usually respond to a line or two that catches my eye in whatever I am reading. The topic is my first interest. What happened to real journalism? If it were not for NPR and the BBC, I would have no faith in news today. 24 news hour cycles are filled with either ranting extremists, or morning talk shows with women in miniskirts and stilettos and ridiculous senstationalism. The TV news is a business, and they want to make money by having the flashiest programs and catchy leadins for ADD tv viewers. In the meantime, real credibility has been destroyed, but unfortunately, people tend to believe what they see on TV as long as it supports their already determined view.

Beck is merely advancing his personal, honest opinion on what he sees happening right in front of him. He lays out well reasoned argument and he has made his unambigious point without hesitation or any attempt to hedge it against the possibility that he is wrong.

Contrary to the popular myth, created by his opposition, he has NOT called for armed insurrection; and he's made that abundantly clear; Beck has merely stated what he believes, why he believes it and provided the evidence in spades, which supports his conclusion. What's more he has an open invitation for those who disagree to come on his air and state their argument; and several times a day, people who disagree with him are presented to do just that.

What's more Beck reiterates time and again, that those hearing his message should NOT take his word for anything he says; that they should do their own homework, as he has done his; and come to their own conclusions...

To lable Beck hysterical, is nothing less than a rationalization to set aside one's own responsibility to stand up and defend their own rights, as a result of the message which he brings. It's intellectual laziness of the first order... and one riding upon sweet irony where it rests upon the erudite intellectual snobbery of NPR and the B freaking BC...

Stephen Colbert ripped apart Fox News host (and New York Times cover boy) Glenn Beck Tuesday night, mocking his 9-12 project, meant to conjure the spirit of compassion and camaraderie Americans felt on September 12, 2001.

"We weren't told how to behave that day after 9/11, we just knew," Beck says to describe the project. "It was right, it was the opposite of what we feel today. Are you ready to be the person you were that day after 9/11, on 9/12?"

"Ready!" Colbert shouted, decked out in a gas mask, holding a gun, and wearing adult diapers.

Colbert then used a classic "Daily Show" tactic, exposing the hypocrisy of Beck's 9-12 project by highlighting comments he made on September 9, 2005.

"This is horrible to say, and I wonder if I'm alone in this," Beck said on his radio program that day, "you know it took me about a year to start hating the 9/11 victims' families? I don't hate all of them. I hate probably about 10 of them. But when I see a 9-11 victim family on television, or whatever, I'm just like, 'Oh, shut up!' I'm so sick of them because they're always complaining. And we did our best for them."

"The 9-12 project is not for families directly affected by 9/11, just people building their careers on it," Colbert said.

Colbert went on to mock Beck's now infamous tendency to cry, and to launch his own "democratic experiment, the 10-31 project."

"It will be scare and balanced!" he joked.

So, given that the odds were a whopping 50/50 that such would be the case; I broke out the calender and found that Friday, 3 April, 2009 was that date and advanced an actual written contract, wherein I set the consideration value at $50, on the conditional premise that where the market closed above 8000 on said date, that I would pay YOU $50 and IF the market closed UNDER 8000 on said date you would pay ME $50... on the specified requirement that YOU OVERTLY ACCEPT THE OFFER... meaning that for there to BE a contract, you must FIRST state your acceptance... for the stated consideration.

And this is key... because that condition was designed to prove one thing... that you would NOT ACCEPT THE OFFER; that despite your declaration that you were CERTAIN the market would close over 8000 on the stated date, you would AVOID accepting a specific offer which set your Money at risk; proving, once again that you're full of shit... and given the certainty that you would also NOT DECLINE the offer, you would attempt to weasel the offer, imply acceptance... HAVING IN NO WAY ACTUALLY DONE SO; for the purposes of hedging; meaning you would ride on the popular PERCEPTION that you had accepted the bet so that if your prognostication that the market WOULD close over 8000 in date certain you could then lay claim to the profit AGAINST WHICH YOU HAD NO CLAIM!

And you had no claim BECAUSE YOU NEVER ACCEPTED THE OFFER!

But once I made the offer, I left my experiment to set... and made no further contribution, so as NOT to obscure the evidence and thus prevent my ability to draw a sound conclusion, about you, your veracity and your moral underpinnings...

The conclusions are clear and indisputable...
