first off- lbj had already announced and stopped bombing north of the 20th parallel in MARCH 1968.....


second- the talks had started in May, they ( the NV) agreed to deescalate their insurgency efforts, hello, they already had, because they had to, they had just got their asses handed to them during Tet, in fact they had already stood down to replenish ammunition stocks & manpower etc. in the south, this is in Giaps memoirs, along with the fact that the NV Politburo felt that they had won their greatest propaganda coup via the American embassy invasion, the huge scale and ferocity of their attacks during tet etc.........they were playing us.

third-if the NV were so set on concessions and ending the war, what difference did it make who won the election? Why didn't they in the next year? 2 years? 3?

forth- it was October 29 ( 5 days before the election) that Vance told LBJ the north was "open to a settlement".....open to a settlement...5 days before the election? gee what a friggin coincidence eh?

I think people read too much into this.

The South Vietnamese had no reason to want to deal with Johnson despite what Madam Chenault said. Johnson had already withdrawn from the presidential race, and the Democrats were falling all over themselves to find a way to sell Saigon out. The idea that any side in the conflict would make a deal with a lame duck president is sort of silly.

Is cutting deals with the enemy during an armed conflict treason or not? If the idea is so silly - & if Nixon & Chennault actually did this - then why did Nixon pursue such a dangerous course of action? If the war could have been negotiated to a close in 1968, then Nixon has a lot of US & Vietnamese & Cambodian & Laotian blood on his hands ...

Nixon was a war criminal. Kissinger is a war criminal. The invasions of Laos and Cambodia were illegal, immoral and strategically disastrous. Somehow, Dr. K. has survived with a reputation as an international relations genius. Just like Ronnie, people have retained entirely erroneous images that only time will cure.

Yeah, that foreigners have no good reason to negotiate with lame duck presidents...

And if you lose, you can totally blame that foriegn policy issue you fucked up for your loss.

Okay- let's get it right here.

Nixon won because LBJ screwed up Vietnam so badly even Democrats wouldn't vote for him.

Reagan won because Carter screwed up Iran.

Obama won because Bush screwed up Iraq.

Eisenhower won because Truman screwed up Korea.

The lesson here is... if you get us into a foreign policy mess, you don't screw it up, or the voters WILL throw you and your party out.
