In the mid 20th century the solid South was broken. Although many Southern Democrats stayed in the party and remained loyal locally, they ceased support nationally, voting Republican in presidential elections. As hatred for integration, civil rights, and the federal government grew so did the strength of the Republican party in the South. As blacks entered the Democratic party whites left. It wasn't that whites embraced the Republican Party, they just couldn't remain loyal to a party which was rapidly turning black and electing blacks to public office.
