As A Conservative Hypocrisy Bothers Me On Both Sides

I didn't say it was illegal.

But you can see by the reaction that it went too ******* far.

Yep it's just a gray area though because everybody has their first amendment right but at the same time everyone has their right to fire you so I don't really know what the answer is here. :dunno:

"Democracy" is just a catch-all term for people choosing through the vote. He wasn't being specific.

Okay but if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and waddles like a duck, it's a duck. So why not just call it what it is?

Democrats, I ask you this question but in reverse. How can you be outraged for Kimmel's removal but didn't have one ounce of outrage over Tucker Carlson's?
:
Because Tucker Carlson was fired by his employer, there’s a key difference. Kimmel’s removal, on the other hand, involved pressure from the federal government, essentially a veiled threat that could affect the network’s license. That’s a very different situation legally and constitutionally.

I appreciate your concern for free speech. Just to clarify, private employment decisions aren’t considered violations of the First Amendment, whereas government coercion can be. So the claim that Democrats are hypocritical for not objecting to Carlson doesn’t really hold, though that doesn’t mean hypocrisy doesn’t exist elsewhere.

I also want to add my perspective on free speech in a public setting. I believe people should be free to say almost anything, as long as it doesn’t directly threaten others or their property. Reactions to that speech, boycotts, protests, even firings, are themselves forms of expression, even when I disagree or feel they’re overreactions. In my view when people discuss free speech most people make the mistake of thinking it means free of consequences for that speech. It doesn't.

What I do object to is government involvement, whichever party is in power, without a very, very compelling reason.

I hadn't followed this story of Jimmy Kimmel's suspension... but based on the little I have heard about it, what you just said was what I too was going to mention.

We don't want to go down the route of censorship, unless we want to end up like the UK.... or worse.

I’m European myself, and my wife is American. I want to clarify something: European countries don’t all have a constitution or the same level of protections for free speech as the U.S. For example, in Belgium, Holocaust denial is illegal under the law, and promoting Nazi ideology, including distributing works like Mein Kampf for propaganda purposes, is also prohibited. That said, I personally feel very few restrictions on what I can say in everyday life.

On the other hand, my wife and I have decided that we won’t travel to the U.S. while Trump is in office. This is mainly because of my activity on forums like this one using a tone like this, which I feel is respectful and my concern that it could affect my ability to enter the country. Simply because I do follow this and it seems that what is considered anti-American is simply disagreeing with the current administration.

From my perspective, this makes the U.S. feel more restrictive in practice, at least for someone like me, than Europe even if, legally, speech is more broadly protected there. Something that in itself seems debatable because this administration seems wholly prepared to test the legal limits of free speech for people who oppose them.

Okay but I still don't think that that changes my point though. As right or left we should be treated equally and get outraged over stuff going on in the world today equally. Otherwise we're just a bunch of hypocrites no matter what party we're from.

It absolutely changes your point. Tucker lost his job at Fox because he cost them $800 million dollars.

Now if someone wants to sue Kimmel (outside of the government) and win and it costs the network $800 million I'm sure he will lose his job also.

The president wasn't threatening Fox to fire Tucker and a long list of others or face government retribution either.

You know I just can't stop thinking about the fact that as much as I support Donald Trump as our president it completely bothers me that he wants Jimmy Kimmel to remain off the air. Yes it's true that Kimmel is insensitive and I don't agree with him whatsoever, but how can we as conservatives be upset for him mocking MAGA and trying to silence his right of freedom of speech while at exactly the same time be upset that Tucker Carlson was thrown off the air for using his free speech?

Democrats, I ask you this question but in reverse. How can you be outraged for Kimmel's removal but didn't have one ounce of outrage over Tucker Carlson's? What also bothers me an awful lot from my fellow Republicans is those who can condemn assassination and attempted assassination of Charlie Kirk and Donald Trump, but cannot condemn assassination and attempted assassination of Melissa Hortman and Paul Pelosi?

Granted I never heard of Hortman and I can't stand the Pelosis, but none of that's right either. There is a difference between taking out and trying to take people who are a physical dangerous threat to us and simply just taking out somebody because you disagree with them politically.

It's not right on either side and I know that this isn't all of you and this post might cause me to be in a lot of hot water with my fellow Republicans, but if you're a Republican and you're acting this way shame on you.

Shame on you because you're no better than the democrats who act like this. You know who you are as I'm not going to mention names and I don't know any specific ones. I'm just saying that it isn't a good look for our party when we're acting exactly the way the left does and that's why they mock us for it and in that case they have every right to.
Trump wanting Kimmel off the air only proves he has a pulse as every other word is anti-Trump for this poor TDS ridden soul.

But Jimmy was never cancelled, just suspended for a week.

And after saying something that was so offensive and blatantly false, he deserved that time off to think about his stupidity, which he tried to apologize for.

Tried to, at least.

Apparentlly Hitler is not powerful enough to remove a late night talk show host that no one ever watches.

Tucker was let go after the court case against Fox revels the length to which they knowingly lied for the benefit of Benedict Donald. There were no mob boss like threats to have him removed or suspended, or else........

Demands for investigations into the events surrounding Jan 6th is not the same as demands for the AG of the US to file charges against all political enemies, and prejudiced pronouncement of guilt from the highest office of the land.

This is broadcast television over the airwaves. You should know this. Half the nation or so is Republican yet airwave TV is mostly Prog Socialist Communist in programming. Pure propaganda pushed as free speech. Put Republican comediennes in those programs. Let them smear and destroy people also.
It's a meaningless distinction since Raygun gutted the Fairness Doctrine. The political broadcast standards only apply to news programs. GOP nutjobs have been broadcasting their vitriolic "hate all things democrat" messaging across public airwaves for decades. Rush, like Kimmel, was an entertainer not a newsman.

Kimmel wasnt suspended because of Trump who is entitled to his opinion.

Kimmel wasnt suspended because of Trump who is entitled to his opinion.

But as the top representative of the government he is not to be issuing his threats.

I also want to add my perspective on free speech in a public setting. I believe people should be free to say almost anything, as long as it doesn’t directly threaten others or their property.

Would this include in your opinion people threatening to urinate on Charlie Kirk's grave because to me it should if it doesn't already.

Trump wanting Kimmel off the air only proves he has a pulse as every other word is anti-Trump for this poor TDS ridden soul.

Yeah and he has every right to say that too but I thought that he was all for freedom of speech?

Kimmel wasnt suspended because of Trump who is entitled to his opinion.

I know that and I don't think that I even implied that's what I was meaning.

Also another thing is that the radical left most definitely started this war but when Republicans continue to stir the pot and fan the flames which I admit I can be guilty of myself at times, how does that look for our party?

You know I just can't stop thinking about the fact that as much as I support Donald Trump as our president it completely bothers me that he wants Jimmy Kimmel to remain off the air.
so he doesn't get the same free speech you want kimmel to have? He has no authority to take away kimmel's job, only the company does. What was their statement on why he was shut down? How is that on trump?
Yes it's true that Kimmel is insensitive and I don't agree with him whatsoever, but how can we as conservatives be upset for him mocking MAGA and trying to silence his right of freedom of speech while at exactly the same time be upset that Tucker Carlson was thrown off the air for using his free speech?
Funny, it seems you forget that ole trump was kicked off almost every platform. Where were you supporting his free speech rights? Can't ever figure folks like you out. The things you need to ignore to make such idiotic statements.
Democrats, I ask you this question but in reverse. How can you be outraged for Kimmel's removal but didn't have one ounce of outrage over Tucker Carlson's? What about Paul Pelosi? he's alive isn't he? Explain how a man standing in front of two police simply can't state help me I'm being invaded when they asked him? If you don't think that odd, then you have no true beliefs.

As for Hortman, what is it you think republicans owe?

15th post
I have been trying to tell you, the two major parties in this country are not worth a sh#t ever since you came to the board. This is why, you should be Independent, as no matter which party you adopt, they will be willfully wrong and try to justify by exciting the devoted, every time. Hypocritical? Absolutely. The best you can hope for is to go Independent and make your decision on which candidate of the moment is worse for the country's future and any one specific point in time. You owe no allegiance to a party or a party leader, and none is deserved.
what does independent get you? name your politicians in offices.

so he doesn't get the same free speech you want kimmel to have?

No he has it and I completely understand why he feels that way however that was pretty stupid for him to say in my opinion considering the fact that he is an advocate for free speech. However, I was just going to post this article here before you responded. This crosses the line big time in my opinion.

Second wave of threatening Charlie Kirk flyers found at Georgetown | Fox News Georgetown acts quickly after disturbing flyers reemerge on campus mocking Charlie Kirk: 'Rest in p-ss'

Funny, it seems you forget that ole trump was kicked off almost every platform. Where were you supporting his free speech rights?

Yes.

What about Paul Pelosi? he's alive isn't he? Explain how a man standing in front of two police simply can't state help me I'm being invaded when they asked him? If you don't think that odd, then you have no true beliefs.

Yes I do admit that it was odd but that was still an attempted assassination.

As for Hortman, what is it you think republicans owe?

Nothing as long as we condemn it just like we have condemned the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

Yes I do admit that it was odd but that was still an attempted assassination.
it was? you don't know that. you have no idea why he just didn't call the police when the door was busted. He didn't reach for help when it arrived, he was not bound nor was he in the dudes control and yet did absolutely nothing. I can only conclude it was staged. Yep, staged.
