The anger and irrationality of the Democrats during this shutdown reminds me very much of the anger and irrationality of both sides of the aisle when they questioned RFK about the COVID vaccine.
There is a lot of money at stake for the insurers:
Notice that last paragraph in blue. If they got $35 billion for people who never made a claim, the apart from the cost of computers that processed the enrollments, that 35B was pure profit. We know that - just as with the huge profit Big Pharma made from the various COVID shots, hundreds of millions of those billions went to the very congressfolk who passed the laws allowing it.
Anyone with common sense knows that the insurance providers are not going to raise their rates by three thousand a month, nor any of the other dire predictions of the Democrats. But they will use losing the COVID subsidies as an excuse to raise them by a few hundred. If not for the latest tantrum by Democrats, the insurers would have been blamed for that. Now all such anger can be directed at Donald Trump, the Goldstein of the modern Democratic Party.
Fun Fact: Obamacare subsidies do NOT go to the insured. They are given straight to the health insurers based on the numbers of enrollees they report.
If there were some way for them to artificially raise that number, they would get even more. Turns out that there is.
Why would someone have an all-important healthcare policy and never use it, not even for a checkup? Often because they don't know that they are "insured."

- Rising numbers of zero-claim enrollees—people who did not file a single medical claim—bolster evidence of rampant fraud in ACA exchanges. Many of these enrollees are phantoms—people unaware of their coverage or enrolled in other plans.
- Biden COVID credits drove fraud by creating zero-dollar plans that are fully subsidized by taxpayers and require no enrollee contributions. Unscrupulous brokers enrolled many people without their knowledge and many others after manipulating information on applications to maximize subsidies.
- The sharp increase in zero-claim enrollment from 2021 to 2024 is not explained by meaningfully higher enrollment among young, healthy beneficiaries.

The confusion on Medicaid status may be related to state-specific branding or private insurance company involvement.
