Are atmospheric rivers a new meteorological phenonomon?

March 24, 2022

Excerpt:

During the past year or so, whenever there is a significant precipitation event on the West Coast, the media headlines "atmospheric rivers."

Ten years ago, hardly anyone talked about such rivers. Now, they are mentioned all the time!
To illustrate the change, here is the google trends analysis of searches on "atmospheric river" from 2004 to today. Before 2010, almost no one was searching for the term. But this November, it was very, very popular. The same thing is true of mentions in newspapers and online.

What has changed?

Nope, they just changed the name to make it sound more ominous

Pineapple express sounded kinda fun, but 'atmospheric river' is so much more scary.

Either way it's gonna rain

Technically ... a "Pineapple Express" comes from the vicinity of the Hawaiian Islands ... thus the "pineapple" in Pineapple Express ... and not all atmospheric river events that hit the West Coast come from this area ...

The new term better reflects the phenomena as we've learned more about them with weather satellites ... and the term does sound more sciency ... I think we learned a harsh lesson letting particle physicists name what they discovered ... charm, strange, goddam, knights that say nie, fuck you and the horse you rode in on ... meteorologists are out there saving lives with their weather forecasts, so they need to be believed ...

Random Factoid = Another name for the Hawaiian Islands is the Owyhee Islands ... the Owyhee River is Eastern Oregon is named after the two Hawaiian hirelings lost and presumed dead in the area ... Owyhee and Hawaii rhyme with each other ... lots of confusion about that ...
