1.Rum is the Oldest Spirit in the World

An original through and through rum is the first booze ever and has a really interesting history if you dive in. The first rum distillation took place in the Caribbean in the 1620s, this led to rum being the first alcohol to be manufactured and distilled. It was also the first spirit that was drank for pleasure and that was not used for medical purposes.

Today, the largest rum distillery is still in the Caribbean as Bacardi has a massive distillery in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It produces 100,000 liters every day. That will make a lot of mojitos. So beer and wine were not the first alcohol drinks?

Rum is great! You don't have to give up Whiskey to like rum!

I like dark rum best, like Myers Dark or Kraken Black, but there are many great spiced rums out there as well, like Appleton. Some of the fruity flavored rums go a bit too far though, maybe good over desert or something, but I never cared for or bought white rum.

Sorry to burst your bubble about rum, but it's quite a bit younger than whiskey, or Scotch which is my preference.

Early beginnings

The story of Scotch begins as early as the 15th century. The earliest documented record of distilling in Scotland occurred in 1494 in the tax records of the day, the Exchequer Rolls.

An entry lists “Eight bolls of malt to Friar John Cor wherewith to make aqua vitae.”

Friar John was in luck – this was enough malted barley to produce almost 1,500 bottles of a potent spirit which would be refined and improved in the years ahead.

Shoot......................the Bushmills whiskey distillery has been around and licensed since 1608.

The Rum articles author didn't do his research

"Whine"? You will get a gigantic hangover from an excess of rum due to the stuff and sugar in the brew. Bourbon is better.

The Sumerians had beer in 3000 BC. According to the Bible Noah was the first winemaker.

I think that they were talking about distilled spirits. Neither wine nor beer is distilled.

Although..........................you can take a can of your favorite beer, put it into the freezer for a bit, and freeze most of the water into ice, and the remaining liquid is mostly alcohol, quite a bit more concentrated than when you started to freeze it. It tastes like crap, but will get you more buzzed quicker than just plain beer.
