1. Trump de-fund Canada.
2. Canada search for other sponsors and find China.
3. In return for their investments in Canada, China wants deployment of Chinese IRBMs in Canada, which is totally unacceptable for the USA.
4. Either the USA attack Canada now, or in any next conflict China will be able eliminate US ICBMs in lesser than 3 minutes.

Money is dust. Actually, its not really about money and never have been. Russia sold Alaska (with all its gold) to the USA mostly to counterweight the British Empire. Russia was not able to keep it (when that amount of gold was found), so selling it to the USA (and make them stronger) was lesser evil than lose Alaska to Canada, and make the Brits stronger.
May be, in future the USA will decide that it is lesser evil to sell Alaska back to Russia to counterweight Chinese Canada and California.
