I don't totally disagree, and think the pressure on Germany is more about unified Europe and muslim extremism and Putin.

It's about power. The same as it has always been. Europe has a long, long historical track record of power grabbing clowns leading to idiotic conflicts.
The real outside threat is Russian energy dependency.

It appears that the threat has been here for years. So, it has already existed for some time and a "new" threat is kind of a smoke and mirrors thang.
