It’s Great That We Talk About 'Food Deserts' — But It Might Be Time To Stop

It's a new term to describe American "food deserts", which predominantly affect black neighborhoods, and we have to get to the root of the socio economic conditions that cause "people of color" to disproportionatly be denied access to fresh fruits and vegetables blah blah blah.

Those stores got tired of being robbed. Period, end of sentence. Now you have Arabs primarily who take over what was a United Dairy Farmer and sell out of date merchandise for extremely high prices.

The cause of that was the local population doing what they do and driving the grocery chains out because they get tired of hiring armed security to man the door as a neighborhood goes to shit around it.

As soon as armed security shows up, you can count on that store being mothballed in 5 years or less. The reason for the armed security is not that grocery chains racism, it was outside influences, otherwise it would still be open, therefore black America is bringing on the "food Apartheid" all by themselves, yesirrebub.

I have seen it over and over. After the King riots the complaint was that the Korean stores were overcharging for spoiled and out of date food. Vons opened a huge supermarket. It was robbed within hours of the grand opening. Customers were robbed in the parking lot. Shoplifting was through the moon and the employees were taking pallets of merchandise off the loading dock. The store tried. It was robbed twice a week at least. After 6 months they called it quits. The empty hulk is still there.

Maxine Waters has made it her mission to keep Walmart and Walmart super centers out of her district and I'm sure she is not alone in the so called Black areas of the city....anger and resentment of others makes you stupid...makes you do dumb and self destructive things....I guess.....

People used to be able to walk to the neighborhood grocery and buy everything they needed. When Neighborhoods were "neighborhoods" and not "The Hood"! The govt begins by buying a home and using it for section 8 family housing. The Residents have no ownership rights or incentive to maintain the property. Family after family moves in and out and the Property value plummets so do those around it. Homeowners who invested their lives have to sell out before the Prices drop even more. The lower housing prices in the area are now desirable to lower income homeowners many will be speculated on and used as Rentals and Section 8 locations. A percentage of the New home buyers will default on their Loans and those houses will also fall into disrepair while proceeding through the foreclosure process driving Housing prices even lower. In come the predators who use the abandoned houses for drugs and other illicit activities as the Neighbors look on and realize their "new neighborhood" has become the same as the "Hood' they left!

The government doesn't buy homes for section 8. They belong to private citizens/,companies.

The govt approves them for section 8 program and subsidizes the rent . Same result . Taking low income people out of the subsidized housing projects and moving them into subsidized housing neighborhoods, Great idea.!

Had a buddy who had just bought his first house around 1985.
The neighborhood was decent but not great.
It wasn't 3 months later that a section 8 scumbag moved in next door. She worked for the post office and had three kids, she paid $250 a month while he paid $900.
Of course they trashed the place and ended up being kicked out due to her delinquent children..

This is how it goes down. Pick a depressed neighborhood. It's the same everywhere. A very nice black or Hispanic family moves in. Everyone is happy for the diversity and these are really nice. The children are well behaved and always willing to lend a hand.

They have visitors from the old neighborhood. Gangs start leaving graffiti. Homes get broken into. Mom and dad have a good friend or brother or uncle that just got out of prison with no place to go. He comes to stay. The niece just got out of rehab. She comes too. By now drug deals are going down on the street corner. Property values have been destroyed. Homes are for sale up and down the street. They are bought by the very poor who won't make the payments. Small businesses have closed. Entire blocks of stores have closed. Tentative bridal shops servicing quincineras have opened. There would be a nail salon and a braiding service. A good sized store has been turned into an indoor swap meet with tables selling various stolen goods. The grocery store is gone. The neat front yards and flower gardens are gone. Rose bushes have given way to the rusting hulks of car carcasses on various stages of cannibalism. Garbage fills the streets, dogs that might or might not be strays start wandering about. Those nice kids now snarl and flash their knives. Then you notice the final line of demarcation between civilization and village. The roofs of homes have sprouted huge bags filled with recycleables. Empty cans and bottles are so valuable that they are protected.

By now you should have moved. If you are so foolish as to think that your love of diversity will protect your home you would be wrong. You will wake up to the small of smoke. The fire trucks will come under gunfire. The police will stuff you and your dog in a car to take to to someplace safe.

You of course will not believe what happened.

You dislike the truth don't you? How do you think nice little neighborhoods and cities became filth ridden slums. Compton, Lynwood, Inglewood, Lakewood were all beautiful little California cities and they all went the same way. Inglewood was particularly stunning. Compton was Beverly Hills South. They didn't destroy themselves overnight. They did it one house, one neighborhood at a time. And it's happening somewhere else right now.

The govt approves them for section 8 program and subsidizes the rent . Same result . Taking low income people out of the subsidized housing projects and moving them into subsidized housing neighborhoods, Great idea.!

For whatever it is worth, I think Section 8 is one of the programs the government does right because they use a sliding scale rent system that allows the recipients to actually work and transition more softly from on benefits than to off benefits. Other programs you are either all in or all off.
