Most people believe in evolution because they've been taught or indoctrinated into believing it was true. Just as if they had been born in ancient times and were taught that the earth was flat, they'd be believing that as well.

They were taught and indoctrinated to believe it via rote instruction, at a level that a person with an average IQ of 100 can understand (and a 12-year old's IQ likely isn't even that mentally developed). So while uneducated people can cling to outdated, Victorian era constructs like evolution, by virtue of having been taught it by rote, it simply isn't true. Any more than alchemy or any similarly outdated, easily debunked theory is true.
