All Things Beatles

It was fifty years ago today....

Exactly fifty years ago today this recording went down to tape, representing the first use of the Rickenbacker "360-12" model, an electric 12-string guitar that would later become the signature sound of the Byrds.

Rickenbacker got one (production model number 2) into the hands of George Harrison when the Beatles hit America and the Ed Sullivan show. The 360's distinctive chiming sound, once Roger McGuinn got one, would become the instantly recognizable token of "Mr. Tambourine Man", "Turn Turn Turn" and the rest of the Byrds' repertoire. But the first time it appeared on a pop song was right here, recorded Februaury 25, 1964:

Also George Harrison's birthday. He would have been 71 today.

Personally, I did not care for them before Sgt. Pepper, but, having said that, my personal favorite is the last filmed song that they did together:

(which, apparently has been removed from Youtube)

"It's the same as any job, you know. It's up and down, you know. Life is up and down all the time. And maybe for us it goes up higher but it comes down lower. Relativity. So, you know, if we have a bad time, it's really bad. (laughs) And if we have a good time, maybe it's really good. But it's only the same, you know. It's relativity. So the same law operates for everybody."
