How can we not have a Beatles thread? Fifty years ago Beatlemania was sweeping Britain and news thereof was starting to float across the pond...

CBS News assembled a story from their London bureau for air on both the CBS Morning News with Mike Wallace and the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite on the same day. The morning slot aired but the evening one did not as plans changed due to the events of the day ---- the date was November 22, 1963...

How can we not have a Beatles thread?

lol... well, ummm... up until fairly recently, we had to endure endless threads and posts on the subject from ginscpy... :)

Musta been before my time, but you see what happened, I lost interest...
I think it was November and 50 years on and all and had visions of following along with "50 years ago today" stuff. But even today December 8 I didn't bother to mention Lennon's death, or the release of I think it was Magical Misery Tour...

Speaking of which...

Love your enthusiasm Dude. But I can't agree on "You Know My Name" being their stupidest song -- not with "Baby You're a Rich Man" out there, not to mention "Piggies" and "Wild Honey Pie", which was just self-indulgent torture.

Fifty Years Ago Today continued...

>> December 17, 1963, marked another important event that helped jumpstart Beatlemania in America. Last week’s 50th anniversary post discussed the importance of Walter Cronkite broadcasting a five-minute story on the Beatles at the end of the CBS Evening News on December 10. After viewing the Beatles story that evening, Marsha Albert, a 15-year-old girl living in Silver Spring, Maryland, wrote a letter to her favorite radio station, WWDC, referencing the news story and asking “Why can’t we have this music in America?” In response to her letter, WWDC disc jockey Carroll James contacted a friend of his who was a stewardess for B.O.A.C. and asked her to bring him the Beatles latest single.

After receiving the disc, James invited Marsha down to the station to introduce the song I Want To Hold Your Hand to America on The Carroll James Show. Listener response was overwhelming favorable, so WWDC put the song in heavy rotation. James sent a dub of the song to DJs in Chicago and St. Louis, and all of a sudden, Capitol was getting demand in three major markets for a single the company had scheduled for January 13, 1964 release. This caused Capitol to rush release the single out on December 26. The impact of that decision will be told in next week’s 50th anniversary post. <<

This is one of my favorite Beatles songs.

Please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away and after all I'm only sleeping.

I remember being 7 or 8 years old and seeing them on the Ed Sullivan show. There were all these hysterical girls screaming and crying so much you could hardly hear the music. I was wondering what the big deal was. I did enjoy their music though. My two favorite pieces from the Beatles are both from George Harrison. While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and Here Comes The Sun.

This one belongs in here because of the lyrics :)
