No one said they wanted to take over the non-confederate states.
The north fought to save the country built 100 years befor.
The USA would not have survived if they let the confederate states go.
It would have set a precedent that if states do not agree with certain federal laws they would secede. The confederates undertood a nation could not survive if states could leave anytime, they put in their consitution a member state could not leave by their own volition.
