A limited U.S. military role in Syria has had an outsize impact over the past four years.

A “limited presence?” An estimated 2,000 troops is a limited presence? Gimme a break.

And how are we helping the Kurds fight the rebels when Turkey – our supposed ally – is trying to wipe out the Kurds?

Iran and Russia claim a victory: Iran has invested heavily with military and economic assistance to prop up Assad since the beginning of the war. Russian President Vladimir Putin sent military forces to support Syria in 2015, the year after the U.S. entered the war.

Both Iran and Russia would view it as a major success if the American military leaves and Assad continues to consolidate power. The same would be true for Hezbollah, the Lebanese group that has fought alongside Assad's forces.

Turkey launches offensive against the Kurds: While the U.S. has partnered with the YPG, the Syrian Kurdish militia, Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan views them as terrorists who threaten his country. Turkey has signaled it wants to launch an offensive in northern Syria against the Kurdish group. Such a move could destabilize a mostly calm area, displacing civilians and touching off new refugee flows.

So what? Our president is doing what should have been done years ago – getting out of another place we have no business being in.

Nope. They will continue to kill each other as they have for thousands of years.

The only change is that our troops won't be there. I applaud that.

Plain speak here.

We need to leave Syria.

We need to make sure that those who threw in with us are taken care of and if Turkey doesn't like it, fuck them and their whore mothers.

Either way, the brothers who died for this venture are going to be dishonored and that falls on Obama AND Trump. Obama for getting us in. Trump for not getting us out honorably.

There never was a mission to protect the Kurds from Turkey. Syria was a mistake. It was always a mistake.

The conflict was born of obama's misguided attempt to destabilize the whole of the middle east in an Arab spring and put the entire region under the muslim brotherhood. It turned Libya into a basket case.

We were never going to protect the Kurds from Turkey. We were never going to get Kurdish independence. We were never going to overthrow Assad. And, we were never going to take that port from Russia.

we take the initiative and engage them with our Commerce Clause.

The US could remove every troop from every ME shithole and it wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference in three months.
Leave them to continue killing each other.
It's what they like to do. It's all they know how to do.
We could move every Kurd to Colorado and let them build a community. Within a year the sand monkeys from Dearborn would be massed along the new Kurdish community and firing rockets at the Kurds.

Is Trump ending the Long War?

If so, whichever POTUS follows him won't waste any time reversing the trend.
those alleged wars should be unlawful if they are not being paid for with wartime tax rates.
Rich people don't pay for wars with their taxes or their blood; they have debt slaves to fill those jobs. At the very least, congress should reassert its Constitutional authority to declare war.

If not now, when?

What happens next?

Trump simply waits until he gets his next set of orders from Vladimir Putin.

I thought it was pretty obvious.

Our friends the Kurds are screwed. Trump aligns with the dictators of Russia and turkey. Their kinship as our only democratically- minded allies in the region is no more.
