After last shooting, it’s time to reevaluate age of majority

Given how much less mature children are at 18 than they were 50 years ago, should there be a discussion to raise the age of majority to 21 and disallow them to buy guns AND vote?

These days, many “kids” are living with their parents well into their 20s, living in their childhood bedrooms and having Mom still prepare their meals, and possibly even doing their laundry. They don’t worry about rent payments and electricity bills.

Compare that to when I was 18. Upon high school graduation, about half the class went on to college and the other half got jobs, moved into shared housing (usually 3 or 4 to a townhouse), and bought groceries and paid their share of rent. They had adult responsibilities.

Children at 18 or 19 are too immature to buy a gun, and Lord knows they cant make an informed decision regarding their vote. Age 21 should Be the new age of majority.
Sure. And because they are too immature, no military service or voting either. They are CHILDREN until 21.

I take it you don't know what the Selective Service Act is. Have you ever heard of a draft board?
Yes, I have. Right now we don’t have a draft. The reason the age was lowered to 18 in the early 70s is because we DID have a draft at that time.

So since we no longer do, it’s time to raise it back to 21. If we ever have an involuntary draft again, we can talk about reducing it temporarily at that time.

You are under the impression I’m a liberal, and pro-abortion. You are wrong.

Why can’t we do both? Keep kids from buying guns, and prevent women from killing their unborn children?
I’m just being a pragmatist.

So now we are back to punishing the whole group for the actions of a few. How very liberal of you.

And I’m just trying to save lives of children, born and unborn.
Then you should have no problem removing voting rights from women. That would save more lives than changing the age of majority. Women as a block, tend to vote for socialism, liberalism, and all sorts of agendas that have driven this countries social fabric into the ground. But I assume you aren’t willing to give up something yourself, in order to save these lives. THAT is a very Liberal mindset Whalen it comes to policy making.

No, that would violate the equal rights clause.

As long as our govt has the right to conscript kids, I'll never agree to that.
Repeal the Selective Service Act & I'll listen

Lack of decent role models, lack of personal responsibility, a trend away from a traditional family structure, a sense of entitlement, loss of work ethic has brought about a generation of narcissistic self absorbed children obsessed with instant gratification.
A generation lost in a virtual world where the worst of human behaviors can be learned and copied with a simple swipe.
A pharmaceutical industry hell bent on medicating a generation that has developed anxiety and stress disorders thanks to that unfiltered access to violent perversion.
Young males are aggressive naturally and now lack proper outlets and decent male role models and no longer learn there are limits.

We are failing our young, especially the boys.

This is far deeper the the Gun.

You’re going about this all backwards. It needs to be lowered to 16. Raising the age of majority simply extends the immunities from the consequences of bad decisions, and misbehavior. Not to mention the absurdity of someone going to jail for fucking a 20 year old, under the pretense that they raped a minor. Absurd.

In most states, statutory consent is already a lower age than 18.

Adulthood for most purposes is not related to the voting age.

But the voting age should be raised to 21, definitely. Lowering it was a bad idea, prompted by a situation that we will never have again (Vietnam draft).

All this would do is push back the age where people become responsible adults. After a couple decades of this people would be whining it needs to be moved to 25.

no contracts signed. No real legal consequences for the most part. Parents would be responsible for them till they were 21.

and then after a couple decades of them being coddled till they were 21 we will have to raise the age to 25.

Again, if you have a problem then you find the source of the problem and fix it.

So you rise the age to buy a gun? Does that fix the problem? No because you still have those people out there. You didn't actually do anything to solve the problem. You just put a coat of paint over the problem and pretended like it magically went away.

I am glad to hear you are more sensible about this issue. The environment today is able to corrupt young minds more so as in the past. Not long ago I read that many households have "children" living under their parents roof ten years+ longer than in the past. In many of those homes there are 28 year old males who have never held a full time job, let alone work at all to support themselves. Maturity is a huge factor whether or not someone should be able to purchase a firearm.

Just a thought... As an aside to the above, maybe this country should have required military service.

The required military service would help. But the young person would still be immature, out of shape, lazy, some social issues at a much higher percentage than those from a half century ago or so. Education can affect it also. To get into the military just in the last decade or more they started to have potential recruits work out before they go to boot camp. A lot more are not qualified to get in. And that is bad because there was a time when it wasn't so.
