Calls grow for South Korea’s president to resign after martial law chaos

There is growing pressure on South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to step down after his aborted attempt to declare martial law, which plunged the country into political uncertainty and sparked a fierce backlash.

• On Wednesday morning, the opposition Democratic Party said it would begin impeachment proceedings against Yoon if he doesn’t step down immediately. His chief of staff and other top officials submitted their resignations while the country’s largest union confederation said members would strike until Yoon quits.

• The president had declared martial law in a surprise late-night address on Tuesday, citing a motion by the Democratic Party, which has a majority in parliament, to impeach top prosecutors and reject a government budget proposal.

S. Korean citizens rushed to the Capital building in order to facilitate a vote by the national assembly to end martial law just hours after President Yeol, a right winger, forbid the assembly to meet. His martial law decree having demanded all political activity and unauthorized press coverage immediately cease.

Instead of storming the Capital, as trump's mob did in an effort to end the constitutional order of a peaceful transition of power, S. Koreans acted to protect their democracy.

In Brazil, Bolsanaro has been indicted for his attempted coup after being forbidden to run for office until 2030.
Brazilian police formally accuse former President Bolsonaro and aides of alleged 2022 coup attempt

It seems we could learn a thing or two about how to treat those who threaten our republic.

Notice no members of the South Korean president's politcal party supported this extreme move.

Contrast that with Jan 6 -- when over 140 Republicans in the House and Senate voted to overturn the 2020 election results.

South Korea's democracy is much healthier than the democracy in this country.

I thought we did.
  1. We learned to disrupt the attempts to certify a selected president installed after stealing a national election even if it means thousands going to jail on bogus charges.
  2. We learned to throw the bum out of office before he could even finish a term.
  3. We learned to install a pro-USA America First true leader of the nation.
  4. And we learned that once in office, to give our leader a clear mandate to bust the chops of the corrupt deep state which has been trying to control our elections, politics, education and media for years with impunity.

True, at least with respect to this power grab. trump took a different path to cease power unconstitutionally and to their everlasting disgrace many House Repubs supported him. Yet through disinformation, apathy, and the slow normalization of behavior previously considered to be antithetical to our democracy much of the public shortsightedly chose a would be autocrat cuz they were upset about temporary inflation.

Still trying to sell J6 as an “insurrection”?

Your J6 propaganda over four years failed bigly and President Trump has been re-elected.

Keep it up, morons.

The mainstream media are backing the wrong side. In South Korea, ethno-nationalism is considered a liberal ideology and the opposition liberal party has traditionally supported Korean MAGA nationalism. The Korean president is fighting against a Korean MAGA party which currently controls the parliament and he was about to be impeached by liberal mobs, making it necessary to declare martial law. The Democratic Party of Korea has made Japan and China its die-hard enemies, while North Korea has become its best friend, dreaming of reuniting Korea.

Some politicians are also supporting the president. Hwang Kyo-ahn, a former South Korean PM who is one of Yoon's high-profile supporters, says he shouldn't be impeached.

He also backs the reasoning Yoon gave for martial law, and calls for the arrest of the National Assembly speaker who urged lawmakers to gather and block Yoon's decision.

So an authoritarian head of state declares martial law to "protect" everyone from "the commies".

Sounds strangely familiar.

What happened in S. Korea was a shock to the system. The citizenry there reacted just as one would hope to a sudden threat to the democratic order. They took to the streets demanding martial law be rescinded.

My concern about what is happening here is it's more gradual but no less threatening in the long run. Outrages are becoming normalized. The nominations of Gaetz, Patel, Hegseth, RFK, Gabbard, Bondi, etc., are an affront to the tradition of prez's trying to fill cabinet posts with ideologically aligned, competent nominees motivated by a desire to work in the national interest. Not to be the prez's sock puppets.

Specious comparisons to trump's prosecutions notwithstanding, we stand on the precipice of an incoming admin promising to use every tool at its disposal to unconstitutionally target political opponents and critical media outlets. A softer version of the martial law declared in S. Korea but with the same goal. Marginalize dissent. When does it get to the point when we take to the streets?

If it came to that, it would have to happen before the regime had enough general public authority to shut it down.

We actually have to think about that now. Incredible.

I hope so. I hope they are beating this same dead horse in another four years. It was such a real winning topic for the dummocrats this time. The leftist MSM sold it, but the only people buying it were the Bidenistas.

Apparently they thought they could act like a fascist regime, rig and steal an election, then when the people responded and called them out, they could just point and say, "Look! An authoritarian head of state declares martial law to "protect" everyone from "the commies! Sounds strangely familiar!" Like a pickpocket running to the police pointing fingers at his victim as the perp. Like Joe Biden giving his own son an unlimited pardon against any and all crimes forever because he was "obviously just the victim of a political attack." The guy who lectured us that "no one is above the law."

Oh wait, they WERE able to bait in at least ONE dummy stupid enough to buy all of that! :auiqs.jpg:

Five million Americans would show up the first night for a WH sleep over if Trump was that stupid.

The numbers would grow exponentially. The crowds would tear Mar A Lago to the ground. And turn Trump Tower into an immigrants' hotel.

Andrew Jackson's inaugural party at the White House was a rager. When Jackson wanted to turn in for the night, he had to climb out a window.

I'm shocked. Yoon Suk Yeol turned out to be a dictator. I cannot imagine what the people in South Korea are going through by almost losing their Democracy. Thank God it was reversed. I am also concerned for the Americans and their families in South Korea both in the military and civilian.
