Due to the tendency for discussions to devolve into meaningless nonsense in the Politics and Current Events areas, I wanted some talk among actual shooters about the topic. Yes, this is spurred by the assassination shot two days ago.

We are told that the range was two hundred yards or so. That the assassin used a high powered rifle and that is what it would take, oh that it had to be a professional hitter to make it.

We know better. 200 yards is a little far, but doable, for a friggin 30-30. Any Remington 700BDL in .270 will make that shot all day with an inexpensive scope from WalMart.

Anyway, I brought this here, where shooters reside, to hear some common sense discussion on the topic. Weapons and skill, not politics or ideology.

In other 2A threads I spoke of my trips to the range and my successes and failures at distance with rifles I have or have access to and will retrace plowed ground.
My vision isn’t terrific, I require glasses, and normally limit myself to the hundred yard range at our local facility. The rifles I shoot most often are chambered in .308 and 7.62 x 39. I do well enough that I am not going to win any matches, but I hit what I point at.
Anyway, for grins, I tried the longer ranges, on different days. Metal plates that I judge to be about 18” square, every hundred yards out to 500.
With the PSAK and a mid range scope, using Wolf steel case rounds, 200 was no misses, 300, about 75%, 400 about half, and they needed to mow, 500 were hidden behind Johnson grass.
All this to say that I do not find the assassin’s shot all that remarkable.

Agreed. I've spent a lot of time on 200yd ranges doing four positions. One should be able to keep it in 2 MOA at 200yds prone, fer shur.

Oh. Full disclosure, Brno small ring Mauser in 7x57mm. Bushnell 2-7.

Should have bought a Leupold...

The last deer I killed (smallish meat doe) was right around 225 yards with a Rem. Model 700 ADL in .308 I had built up for me in the mid-90s.

Rem. ADL action, 20" Krieger sporter contour barrel, Timney trigger, bedded and free-floated in a Bell & Carlson fiber stock, topped with a Leupold 3 X 9 X 40 Vari-X II scope.

Dated by today's standards I guess but at 100 yards it shoots sub-MOA. I can usually cover a three-shot group with a quarter if I do my part.

You can see the rifle on the 4-wheeler I had at the time.

Hell, the last buck I killed I shot at 175 yards just using an iron-sighted 1955 Marlin L/A in .35 Rem....It dropped where it stood.

Just the other day I bought a 106 year old 8mm Mauser sporter made in Danzig, Prussia. It was made from a Kar 98A.

No optic (and old eyes) so I only shot it at 50 yards and it was still able to produce almost a sub-MOA group. The double-set trigger helped.

The older guns can still produce if they are in good shape.

Ought to blur the license plate.

200 yds is an extremely easy shot even for an amateur. Even with open sights. It's child's play for a zeroed weapon using a scope.

What size is an extremely easy group shot by an amateur at 200yds, prone?

None, though a deer and her fawn wandering out of the woods did shut down the range one day for a few minutes. It is the only publicly accessible range for many miles, so we take what we can get.
I've only shot at ranges from grass berms. Bring your own shooting mat.

Depends on a lot of things. Caliber and effective range of the gun. I always shot better than the owner of the gun when friends let me fire their gun because of good fundamentals and surprise trigger pull. I figure you're doing pretty good if all of your shots are within 3 inches of bulls-eye, if you're an amateur. First time I shot a Civil War black powder revolver pistol at 20 meters I hit within 1/2 inch of the bulls-eye. It had next to zero recoil which made the shot easy. I fired a flintlock 50 cal musket that sprayed sparks all over my face. Both times smoke obscured the targets so much that I had to walk up to see if I even hit anything.

I don't know squat about guns. I did find this pod-cast commentary interesting, from someone who used to be rather notorious for "truth telling," who claims to have used this weapon.

He had an interesting observation I thought?

He's calling people morons and all but he needs his eyes checked.

It's not easy to see but the shooter even on the roof has the rifle wrapped in a dark cloth (Black or Blue.) He lays the gun in the gutter, just before he lowers his body over the edge and just before he drops, he grabs the gun with his right hand and then drops. You can see the straightness. of the "towel"in more than one frame.
