Anyone want an example of refusing to follow an illegal order? I have one and it involved yours truly.

Change of command, in port Red Sea. Captain of my ship selected for Admiral and scheduled to depart in the middle of our deployment. Change of command ceremony held on the flight deck. Relieved Captain departs. Ship is to get underway that afternoon. For sea detail, I am the Engineering Officer of the Watch which means I control everything that makes the ship run.

We had a steam plant, so we were getting everything ready to go, a process that takes about a half hour. I passed to my phone talker to request permission to test main engines and spin to warm. All of the other preps by the bridge and other stations were proceeding along. Permission was granted to test and spin main engines, so we did. Test was reported SAT, and continuing to warm, which consists of distributing heating by rotating the engines forward and reverse at low RPMS, not enough to move the ship. We do this to prevent the steam turbine rotors from bowing at higher RPMs causing the turbine to basically explode.

Word came down from the bridge to stand by to answer all bells. I told my phone talker to reply "negative, we are spinning to warm main engines." I hear him repeat my reply. Standby to answer all bells is the order coming back from the bridge. I tell my phone talker to repeat the negative reply. The order is repeated from the bridge. I tell my phone talker to respond again.

We have an intercom box we used to talk directly to the bridge but in a high noise environment we use phone talkers with headsets. About that time, I hear my new Captains voice screaming at me to stand by to answer all bells. I politely responded, "Sir, I have not completed warming my engines. I cannot stand by to answer all bells." My new Captain blew up! I will spare you the details, but shall we say he was not happy that I declined to follow an illegal order, he just didn't think it was illegal. He then asked who I was and where the chief engineer was. At that exact moment, the Chief Engineer hit the bottom of the ladder to be with me in main control for the sea detail. I told the Captain that he was just entering the space and I would send him to the bridge. I told my Chief engineer what had happened, he laughed, shrugged and said, ""I'll go train him!" While he climbed to the bridge, we continued to warm engines, and I reported "Ready to answer all bells". We got underway with no further problem.

The Chief Engineer told the Captain I was right to refuse his order, and nothing was ever said about it again, except when the Captain had a question about anything in the future, he knew I had my shit together and never questioned me again. My Chief Engineer would constantly remind me that I was the first person in the Captain's new command to really piss him off!

Our Captain came from shore duty and had not commanded a ship in several years and merely forgot that steam ship engines must be warmed about 10 minutes before maneuvering or else you risk killing every person in that engine room. I potentially saved my own life as well as those of my other sailors. However, I doubt any of them would be dumb enough to follow that order if I had given it to them.

In the wake of Charlie Kirk, there were calls by the right to end the violent rhetoric under accusations it was fueling hate and violence (which I agree with). I guess the president didn't get that memo.

For the record, sedition is the advocacy of violence against the government. The lawmakers involved were advocating peace by the government. It's kind of literally the opposition of sedition.

It should also be noted that the maximum punishment under the actual sedition statute is 20 years, it does not include death.
