He offered Iran a window to reach a diplomatic agreement, a chance they squandered, leading to a reckoning that has shifted the balance in the Middle East.

The roots of this confrontation trace back to November 4, 1979, when Iranian revolutionaries stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, holding 52 American diplomats hostage for 444 days.
