2025 U.S. Open Tennis

Some of the matches from Day 5 I was most interested in were:

Donna Vekic v. Coco Gauff. Vekic had a chance to close out the first set on her serve, but sounded like an injury started to hamper her. Coco wins the tiebreaker, then wins the 2nd set more easily.

Amanda Anisimova defeated a fast-rising young Maya Joint.

In five-setters, more seeds fall:
Majchrzak over (9) Khachanov (who squandered five match points); Altmaier got the best of (26) Tsitsipas; (19) Cerundolo wasn't ready for Reidi's comeback from two sets down.

Breaking the string of seeds falling in five...

(24) Cobolli defeated Brooksby, and the last match of the night to conclude saw (14) Tommy Paul hold off a comeback from Borges.

And the Women's doubles tournament began.

Third Round singles action begins today, and you'll see some seeds facing off against each other.

Called the Alexander Bublik upset over Tommy Paul. :113:
Didn't call the Felix Auger-Aliassime upset over Zverev. :dunno:
Three of the eight men's matches ended via retirement. 🤕

There is one qualifier still around (men's draw - Leandro Riedi)

My two girls lost today (Elena Rybakina, Cristina Bucsa)

Barbora Krejcikova fought off eight match points against to come back and defeat Taylor Townsend.

Three American women still in contention for the women's title (Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, and Amanda Anisimova).

Taylor Fritz wins in straight sets, keeping American men's hopes alive. Next test will be quite tougher against Novak Djokovic.

Carlos Alcaraz continues to roll.

Amanda Anisimova v. Beatriz Haddad Maia

The battle between Osaka (2018/2020 champ) & Gauff (2023 champ) should be interesting.

Y'all getting excited about the quarterfinals? I know you're out there, tennis fanatics. :113:

The highly anticipated matchup of Naomi Osaka v. Coco Gauff saw Osaka take care of her younger opponent easier than expected.

Beatriz Haddad Maia struggled against Amanda Anisimova. Iga Swiatek easily put away Ekaterina Alexandrova. And Karolina Muchova had the most competitive match of the day with her three-set win over Marta Kostyuk.

Felix Auger-Aliassime continues his run over higher ranked players with the upset of Andrey Rublev.

Jannik Sinner blasted past Alexander Bublik, Alex de Minaur easily defeated the qualifier Leandro Riedi, and Lorenzo Musetti had it easy too over Jaume Munar.

More QF's on Wednesday
(order of play not released yet)

Alrighty folks, we have arrived at the trophy end of the tournament.

Amanda Anisimova will take on Aryna Sabalenka for the women's singles final today.

Anisimova avenged her Wimbledon trashing by Iga Swiatek to make her second consecutive final. Anisimova actually leads Sabalenka in their head-to-head 6-3, including Amanda's most recent semifinal victory at Wimbledon. Amanda seeks her first grand slam title. Aryna has won three grand slam titles, with her most recent coming from last year's US Open.

The men's final will be Sunday, with Carlos Alcaraz playing Jannik Sinner. This is the first time in the Open Era that the top 2 seeds faced off in the Men's Final in all four Grand Slam Tournaments.

The Men's Doubles Final precedes the Women's Final today, with the Spanish/Argentine pairing of Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos taking on the British duo of Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski.

Today we will also have the Boy's Singles, Boys' Doubles, Girl's Singles, Girl's Doubles, and some wheelchair finals.

Yesterday, the Women's Doubles titles were won by Gabriela Dabrowski (CAN) 🇨🇦 and Erin Routliffe (NZL) 🇳🇿 over Katerina Siniakova (CZE) and Taylor Townsend (USA)

Interesting to see if the American curse continues for Sabalenka.

It's a wrap, folks!

Aryna Sabalenka defended and won the Women's Singles Final.

Carlos Alcaraz won the Men's Singles Final in four sets.

Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos fought off three match points against to win the Men's Doubles Final.

In the Juniors Finals...
Boy's Singles: Ivan Ivanov
Boys' Doubles: Keaton Hance / Jack Kennedy * (American duo defeated another American duo)
Girl's Singles: Jeline Vandromme
Girl's Doubles: Alena and Jana Kovackova

Final comments? 🎾

The main singles draws begin this Sunday, August 24 for the U.S. Open tennis tournament.

The previous week saw three qualifying rounds with the winners making it into the main draw.

We also saw a controversial revision of the mixed doubles format which was played and concluded in two days.

The positives saw huge crowds to watch the mixed doubles and qualifying rounds, bringing in much revenue. Great atmosphere for a tournament that is otherwise largely ignored. Same for the qualifying matches.

The negatives were that the scoring and atmosphere made the mixed doubles more of an exhibition than a traditional tournament. Scoring was changed so you can win a set in four games instead of the traditional six. Four rounds were played featuring primarily top seeded singles players (thus making it more of a draw), but at the expense of actual doubles players. The only exception was they allowed the defending champions (who were "unseeded") to compete in the tournament.

In the end, the defending champions (Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori) defeated the makeshift teams of singles stars. The team of Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud fell in the super tie-break.

So as the main competition begins, who are you eager to watch? What match-ups are you looking forward to? Have you watched any of the lead-up tournaments? Do you have a dark-horse pick?

🎾
Did you hear them boo Trump? If you didn't it's because the US Tennis Association tried to silence the boos. LOL.

Trump Is Repeatedly Booed At The U.S. Open

Multiple broadcasters captured the jeers despite the USTA's reported efforts to silence them.

Later in the match, he was booed again for an extended period after the camera panned to him during a set break.

ABC and ESPN, however, were among those that continued to air the jeers and heckling that occurred, refusing to bow to requests to filter dissent.
