Why listen to known liars from MAGAT?

In Chicago Public Schools (CPS), while reading proficiency has shown improvement, a significant number of students still struggle to meet grade-level standards. The 2023-24 Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) results indicate that 30.5% of CPS students in grades 3-8 met or exceeded expectations on the English Language Arts (ELA) exam, a rise of 4.6 percentage points compared to the previous year, but still below pre-pandemic levels.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  • Proficiency Rates:
While the most recent data shows a positive trend, only 30.5% of CPS students in grades 3-8 are considered proficient in reading.

  • Post-Pandemic Recovery:
CPS has seen a return to pre-pandemic reading proficiency levels, indicating a significant recovery from the disruptions caused by the pandemic.

    • Need for Continued Improvement:
Despite the gains, a large percentage of CPS students (approximately two-thirds) remain below grade level in reading, highlighting the need for continued efforts to improve student achievement.
    • Factors Contributing to the Challenge:
Several factors contribute to the challenge, including socioeconomic disparities, the impact of the pandemic on learning, and the need for increased resources and support for students and schools.
    • Emphasis on Early Intervention:
Addressing literacy gaps early on, through targeted interventions and support, is crucial to ensuring that all students reach their full potential.
I guess that's why Chicago parents go to townhalls screaming about how their kids are failing and getting pulled into gangs. Oh but look, we have a "study"!! PFFFFFT

Yeah, but why should the teachers there make more in that white school than the teachers in the black schools? That sounds racist, and Chicago is bluer than blue.

As far as I know teachers are not eligible for Social Security. I'll never forget a retired teacher telling me many years ago (15 at least) that he was shocked by the number of increases he received to his pension, and what stood out was when he said "I don't know where this state gets the money", and that's it, the state does not have the money, that's why taxes are excessive in Illinois.

The real killer is the police and firefighter unions, they get hurt, they can start their pension early, otherwise, they can retire after 20 and get huge increases in their pensions over time. If you retire in your early 40's your pension could be massive.

And, of course, all the politicians get the same.

That's what you keep voting for.

You don't have to be white to produce results. It takes people like Jaime Escalante. THOSE are the people who should get paid.
I had a teacher friends who bested Jaime Escalante's record. He taught for 13 years when I left and never had a student fail the AP Calc exam. He was also queer, and everyone knew it. Should we only hire gay math teachers?

I see you guys want to tutor black kids in yer spare time, because you was a straight A student.

I think what you really see here is.... WHAT the F*** has the Department of education been doing all these years??? huh? 30% proficiency, even 40 % proficiency is inexcusable if teachers are being paid well.
The slam here is not on black kids but on these adults who are getting well compensated for little results.
Its about accountability.

Brings me back to the same issue I have with pro sports---

Why is it that in every job I have ever had, my salary was determined both by my position AND performance? All we need to do is hold school teachers and NFL players to the same standards---

Contracts based upon performance and results. Do this good, get this much. End of story.

Here's the thing. Teachers CANNOT be blamed for the utter failure of K-12 education in the Inner Cities, but the educational disaster that was the Pandemic WAS THEIR FAULT. They closed down the schools and made absurd, counterproductive demands on the States.

If the teachers' unions were truly interested in EDUCATION, they would be in the forefront of the assessment of the success of individual teachers, so that the reasons for that success could be investigated and spread around more generally. But they abhor any attempt to evaluate teachers on the basis of their students' progress.

Few people resent compensating teachers generously, if the teachers' are demonstrably competent. But that is not the case, and will never be the case as long as Teachers' unions hold sway.
