Poor people are NOT poor--because Rich people are rich. 50% of the working class in this country pay no federal income tax what-so-ever--and those in the top 10% already pay 67% of the entire tax base of it.

It's not fair to expect that those that pay no federal income tax receive the same benefits that those that do. They're a monkey on the backs of all taxpayers--and there is absolutely no reason what-so-ever that someone who works doesn't pay a penny toward the operation of this government.

The poor need to get an education, get a job, keep a job and climb out of the situation with help but not by enabling them to stay poor. The American government assistance programs are not socialism. To suggest so merely evidences your lack of understanding. Government assistance to the poor to help them get education, to get jobs, to make them taxpayers is what social democracy is all about. Those who oppose this are simply not thinking clearly.

Here's one for you: Libertarianism is an extreme reaction to the basic concept of government. Cutting away everything ever that has to do with government isn't the solution. It wasn't even a principle that the Founding Fathers relied upon, even after they'd started a revolution.

Kaz, just because you see all welfare as a hand out doesnt make it so either. Your "screw em all if they can't take care of themselves" is not only uncaring, but it's a principle that would bite you on the ass if it were ever carried through with. Ultimately I think that's the difference between conservatives and liberals - conservatives see things in black & white while liberals see shades of gray.

Neither is better than the other...simply different.

Conservatives really respond to the idea of cutting government to the quick --- it's a black and white option. Let's CUT CUT CUT CUT. Another example, the conservative meme of "it's not in the constitution!!" It's a black and white issue. Either it's in the original document that the FF wrote or it isn't.

Liberals, on the other hand, while they can see multiple options in nuanced ways...they can get caught up in the nuance...and fail to follow a simple idea to it's completion. Politically they send mixed messages that don't seem as strong as conservative messages because they're balancing 2 or 3 issues in one sound byte.

Again, neither is inherently better than the other, just different.
