Well that's my question and what I'm looking for info on. How do they get the numbers, off polls, off IRS reports, off what? Like if I fill out some paperwork and check "unemployed" and there's no further question about if I'm looking for work or just a housewife or stay-at-home-mom or w/e, I would think that falls on the "Unemployed" count wouldn't it? I'm just wondering how they do the stats thing for unemployment numbers because it's something I've never actually looked into.

The recession inherited by the Obama administration officially ended in June 2009, but the labor force participation rate continued to drop during Obama's two terms, hitting 62.4 percent in September 2015, its lowest point in 38 years.

We're talking retirees, disabled, housewives, full time students, independently wealthy, etc. And the 5.7 million not in the labor force who say they do want a job aren't doing anything about it, 3.3 million haven't done anything at all...even ask a friend if they knew of anything, in the last year. In April, 424,000 people joined the adult civilian non-institutional population (by turning 16, immigrating, or leaving the military, prison, or an institution). 135,000 of those entered the labor force (118,000 as employed, 17,000 as unemployed) and 290,000 entered the population as Not in the Labor Force.

In 1999, the labor force participation rate hit its all-time peak. The annual average population age 55+ was 55,548,000 out of an age 16+ population of 207,753,000 (26.7%)
31.8% of the 55+ population was in the labor force, meaning 68.2% of those 55+ were not in the labor force and the % of the population age 55+ and NOT in the labor force was 0.267*0.682 = 18.2%

In 2015, the annual average population age 55+ was 87,102,000 out of an age 16+ population of 250,801,000 (34.7%) a big increase.
39.9% of the 55+ population was in the labor force (a big increase)..so only 60.1% were not in the labor force.

BUT......0.601*0*0.347 = 20.9%

SO, even though a smaller percent of age 55+ are not in the labor force, it's still a larger % of the 16+ population.
