American fans are not crazy enough

A soccer referee was beheaded and his head displayed atop a wooden stake at midfield after a match erupted in violence in Brazil.

The bloody brouhaha began when the match’s referee, Otávio Jordan da Silva de Catanhede, became embroiled in an argument with player Linda dos Santos Abreu over a disputed call during a game in the town of Pius XII.

The argument reportedly ended with Jordan ejecting Abreu. Following the player’s ejection from the game, Abreu and Jordan began to fight. During the fight, Jordan produced a small knife and stabbed Abreu, 31, who reportedly died of his injuries en route to a local hospital.

Friends and family of the deceased subsequently rushed the field, tied up Jordan, 20, fatally stoned him, quartered his body, and then, according to the Associated Press, which cited local media accounts of the murder, staked the referee's head at midfield of the soccer pitch

I can see why they want to hold the World Cup in Brazil next year

Beheadings will bring big ratings

Soccor could be a lot more popular here in the U S if they changed the game a little. If each team had two goalies and they doubled the width of the goal. That way teamwork would be more important and there would be a hell of a lot more scoring. The way it is now a 1-1 tie can be considered a good game. Ties in any contest are lame. The lack of physical contact is lame. Not being able to use your hands is lame. They should be at least allowed to dribble the ball.

Soccer players have to be in the most excellent shape. You try running for that long. I am not a big fan, but it is fun to watch the world cup and see the best of the best.

We don't need to do that. That's what baseball did after the 1995 strike, they juiced up the ball and the players.

Soccer is a phenomenal team sport

The problem is that team USA can't seem to contend in the highest ranks

Baseball would be better if they played on ice, the players skated around, had sticks, and shot pucks in nets.

Then it would be better.

Maybe, but the players would mostly have faces that look like ground beef beyond its expiration date and would only be able to play for a few minutes at a time. Plus, it would be cold.

I find less scoring and tie or close scores in sports much more interesting because this is the indication that the teams are equally matched and the battle on the field is much more enjoyable, 50% of the time. The other 50%, an even or close score may mean both teams were reluctant to act.

But I would prefer even or close scores on any sports over one team dominating the other...

No athletic contest should end in a "tie." It goes against the very point of having a contest.
