Why is it that republicans fail to realize that the ONLY way to boost wages for the poor...

Yes we do need more skilled workers. How do you propose poor people acquire these new skills?

Finish high school. For most poor, there is no cost for this. If you take it seriously and get good grades, you might earn scholarships to help with college costs.
Take advantage of programs that help with college. Even a community college is good. Fill out FAFSA for benefits and loans. It can be done even if you have no money. A summer job, at minimum wage, is usually good enough to save money for college books and some spending cash.
Take studies seriously whether in high school or college.

...is to the raise the minumum wage? You people whine about the poor on welfare yet you are too dense to realize that the only way to break the cycle of poverty is to force employers to pay more. IF the minumum wage is raised, far less peeople are eligible for programs like food stamps. Problem solved.

This really isn't hard to figure out. Corporate profits are already at an all time high. The wage gap in this country is staggering. Where is the incentive for these "job creators" to choose to raise wages on their own accord? Why invest in a strong labor force when it is just easier for them to keep the ridiculous amount of money they already earn? The US has the widest income inequality gap in the world. Pathetically, you people call what I am saying "envy" and it's so moronic. This is an economic issue that will eventually affect the entire economy. If the poverty in this country continues to grow and the middle class continues to shrink, the economy will continue to destabilize and more crises will occur. This economy, small businesses especially, depend on consumer spending. Consumer spending can't flourish based on the current climate.

18 million people make less than 10.10 per hour. How many more make less than $15 which is the wage one must be able to live off of based on current inflation?

When will liberals realize that the only way to boost wages is for people to qualify for better jobs? And why did Dems stop school choice when it was working to give poor students a real chance at a better life?

No, the left thinks throwing money at things is the only way to handle problems and it never works.
Yes we do need more skilled workers. How do you propose poor people acquire these new skills?

Give incentives to companies that do on the job training.
Like what? It would need to be a pretty wide policy.

On-the-Job Training and TAA Programs Virginia Employment Commission
Trade Adjustment Assistance Act – OJT
The Virginia Employment Commission, under TAA (Trade Act of 1974, As Amended), gives businesses funds to provide OJT to TAA-eligible individuals to train them in a skilled or semi-skilled occupation.*On-the-Job Training is a method of training new employees at your worksite, using the company's skilled employees as instructors. OJT provides a unique opportunity for employers to hire and save money on training at the same time. On-the-job training is a contractual agreement made between an employer and the Virginia Employment Commission. The employer agrees to hire and provide substantive on-the-job training to a qualified individual. The VEC will reimburse the employer up to 50% of the training period wage, up to the participant's individual account limit.*Participants must meet guidelines to be eligible for this program.
Well if such a thing could be implemented nationwide it would help. However it would take a long time to implement. Also, who would fill the entry level positions?

Pretty sad when arrogant progs announce that being "poor" in America is a permanent condition and they shouldn't even try to rise above the level that the government sets. I think Stalin said the same thing.

Corporate America is sitting on $3 trillion in trickle down wages as we argue over whether we can raise minimum wage

Wrong....lower taxes so businesses can thrive, improve education by getting rid of the democrats who control it....that will help poor people have a chance at life.....

Sorry...but that makes no fucking sense

Maybe you can explain it

You Said: Exactly how do you expect businesses to absorb the higher wages, higher payroll taxes and higher workers compensation insurance? Those are just the direct pay related costs, there will be more.

I say: Well, well, well, so businesses can pay the executives and CEOs obscene amounts of money. But they can't afford minimum wage increases for the poor? This is classic class warfare. Why do you expect the tax payers to pay for WalMart and McDonald's workers food stamps? When McD and WM refuse to pay fair wages to their employees, we the tax payers pay for their social services including Medicaid and food stamps. Either way, either the corps pay for this expense or you and I have to foot the bill. Which option do you prefer?

You aren't very bright are you Savior?

Did God tell you that Communism is the way o go?

Which God? What is God? Explain what God is and what it's supposed to mean. Then we will continue this discussion.

Nope. I'm not wrong but I would like to understand what the heck you were trying to say Mr Neddite. I'm quite well educated but I have no idea how to decipher your statement...... "They fail to understand the enormous impact the internet has had on business and since they don't believe in education and are not themselves educated, they have no clue what it costs."..... and how this might be related to minimum wage jobs being intended for the very young and unskilled. Your last sentence does not merit a response.

YOU are the one who claims to be the "savior",it behooves YOU to explain what God you serve.

Another Billy Triple Fail troll thread where he gets his ass handed to him, yet again.
Hey, BIlly. We've had like 3 increases in min wage in the last 8years. Why arent people making more money already?

Some costs will be passed on to consumers, but it won't be nearly as much as you think. As an example, a restaurant will operate on a budget that allows for a 20% labor cost. Food costs run around 30%, utilities, rent, payroll taxes, and insurance round out another 30%, leaving a 20% profit margin. If current labor is based on $8.00 per hour for all employees and you want to raise their rate to $16.00 (doubled to make calculations easier), then labor would increase to 40%, leaving zero profit. In order to get the same dollar amount in profit, prices would need to be raised 20%. So in order to double everyone's wages, prices only need to increase 20%.

So, yes, some costs will be passed on to the consumer, but everyone has to do it, and as all these people now have more money to spend, business actually increases, so prices actually do not need to be raised 20%, but a bit less than that. Now, about those payroll taxes. Guess what? One of the main reasons that SS and Medicare is hurting so bad is due to the fact that average and median wages have been decreasing over the years, so those programs are actually collecting less than they should be. Now personally, I think $15 per hour for the minimum wage should be a target for 2020, while $10.00 per hour should be put in place now. I also do not have a big problem with staggering the minimum wage as Australia does. Teenagers make much less in Australia working minimum wage jobs than older adults. There is a bit more incentive to make employers promote people from within as they get older, so they aren't just paying the maximum minimum wage for every entry level position.

^a good video. But a bad idea of what socialism actually is. But that's 'Merica. We don't know the difference between Socialism, Communism, and Capitalism.

Gotta keep our priorities straight. Stupid RWS would rather subsidize Big Business with their taxes than feed children, women, elderly, disabled vets.

They think its just fine to buy from Walmart, McDonald's and others who teach their employees how to get welfare rather than just pay them a livable wage.

While GOP Shames Poor On Food Stamps, We Pay Big Oil $10 Million-A-Minute

Republicans would love to have you believe that poor people wanting to eat something other than cat turds with their SNAP benefits is what you should be screaming about. It’s a real simple formula, actually: billionaires pay millionaires to convince the middle class that it’s poor people to blame for all their ails. It helps to have an entire fake news network to get the message out 24/7 as well. But while they drop this Weapon of Mass Distraction on the gullible masses, the real dirty culprits continue feeding at the trough until their freaking heads explode. (That is a pretty funny image.)

According to a new estimate compiled by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Big Oil companies are benefiting from global subsidies of $5.3 trillion a year. To break that down a little further, that’s equivalent to $10 million a minute every single day. Conversely, in 2012, the average American taxpayer making $50,000 per year paid just $36 towards the food stamps program. Now you might be quietly thinking, “Yeah, but fossil fuel helps get me to the job I hate, and it’s not like we can use poor people as a fuel source.” One, don’t give the Koch Brothers any ideas; two, the majority of those fat subsidies go towards paying off the costs of polluters not compensating the governments for their eco disasters.

Take New Jersey’s professional YouTube screamer and occasional governor Chris Christie, for example. Christie gift wrapped a present to Exxon — a big fat potential 2016 campaign donor — at the expense of the environment and residents of New Jersey. Since his 2016 power lust is way more important than the people of New Jersey, Christie blatantly interfered with his state’s $9 billion lawsuit against oil giant Exxon Mobil when he let them off the hook for billions. This is just one of many egregious examples of this kind of scumbaggery.

20% profit margin? Maybe at places like the old la France in wheeling Illinois, it is more like 1 to 6%

It's amazing how cons just don't get it. Keep blaming the poor for being poor and for taking on subsidies from tax payers while supporting subsidies for big business that doesn't need it. You guys crack me up.

I was just using those percentages to make the calculations easier to understand. Actually with lower profit margins, increasing wages would lead to an even lower increase in prices to pay for those wage increases. BTW, there are many restaurants that earn close to 10% in profits. Many do not though. My son works at a place that is making over 20% but they have a booming business. They netted over $1.5 million last year from their two restaurants.
