Specialists in infectious disease are protesting a gigantic overnight increase in the price of a 62-year-old drug that is the standard of care for treating a life-threatening parasitic infection.

The drug, called Daraprim, was acquired in August by Turing Pharmaceuticals, a start-up run by a former hedge fund manager. Turing immediately raised the price to $750 a tablet from $13.50, bringing the annual cost of treatment for some patients to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

"What is it that they are doing differently that has led to this dramatic increase?" said Dr. Judith Aberg, the chief of the division of infectious diseases at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She said the price increase could force hospitals to use "alternative therapies that may not have the same efficacy."

This is pretty bad. I was searching into this last night as it appears as though it is also used as a cancer treatment in certain cases.

It is not just the big pharma companies. In order to get a drug approved it take endless amounts of trials and even the FDA can tell a doctor or whoever is putting it all together to go piss off or even throw them in jail.

So if I was dying tomorrow and wanted to try something that seemed promising our government of big corporatism commerce could in essence tell me or think to tell me what treatment I must used or take.

Anyhow I started tracking down the natural herbs that may be used in making this drug as it goes along with the parasite treatment I was looking into.

It appears Valeriana officinalis L. which has Pyrrolizidine alkaloids may be one of the ingredients.

Its obscene and we're the only country that lets drug companies consistently gouge the patient. Walk into an "apothecary" in London, talk with a trained professional and buy OTC drugs that are still under scrip here.

As usual, you can thank the Repubs for not letting this be addressed in ObamaCare.

This company bought the company that was selling it for 13 dollars a pill so they had NO research invested , just bought it and jacked up the price

They'll be here soon enough to start whining about R&D costs.

Well ,there's a very simple solution to their R&D costs. We, the people, reimburse pharmaceutical companies their R&D costs when a drug has been proven effective.

I know I read through the articles. Their only claim can be the cost incurred to buy the company but I bet if you search it through you find it is intricately connected to other type corporatist bs going down. Another purpose trying to force medical care insurance companies. They can do this type of bs and get away with it.

typical standard child vaccines used to be two to three bucks now they are 1,800.00.

Wonder what they're selling the pill for in other countries.

Valley Fever is common in Tucson. When I lived there, we would go to Mexico to buy Nizoral to treat dogs. The drug is prescribed according to weight. A medium size dog could cost several hundred $ a month. The FDA put a stop to that and the result was a lot of dead dogs.

Same with humans going to Mexico to buy drugs.

I don't know the status of this now but a lot of people get their drugs and medical care from other countries.

Yeah..it is easy to make a pill….harder to create the pill from scratch. Britain isn't paying the 300 million dollars to get the cure created…they just buy the result…..

The drug was generic, this guy bought the company with the idea of making big money. He had nothing to do with creating anything.

Still searching bones; here is a few more pages that may help if anyone else is looking into the herbal aspect

One of the things I have notice about herbs is that here where we have big pharma and fda certain herbs are strictly called poisons when they are ones used in pharmaceutical applications. Even when these herbs were used for centuries before big pharma came along to turn it all into commerce.

One has to wonder about what kind of ethics and morality people who do this kind of thing have. There should be some place that one can find the names of the CEO and other managers of the company and the names of the Board of Directors if they have such. And they should be published on some sort of Page of Infamy.

There you go blaming the fuckin government once again, instead of placing blame where it belongs....do you watch tv? Just about every motherfuckin day, there's a lawsuit pending about some drug these bastards put out yesterday, that is now causing serious harm to people and people are dying....all this because the gov. bends to public pressure and is not allowing these drug companies time to get these things right and as a result, people die.

You want to blame somebody, blame a culture, ie the US, who wants things done yesterday at all costs. Blame PX companies that push drugs faster than a drug dealer on a corner just to make a quick buck...meanwhile we're going on how many years looking for and funding real cures for cancer, Leukemia, heart disease, you name it and their biggest bet to date....a blue pill that makes a 90 year old man's dick hard.....again, you people to find focus and get off the hate of the fed. gov.

Not just that its monopolistic practices all across the spectrum that arent prosecuted. The govt wants it to be expensive.

Home Page - Turing Pharmaceuticals | Developing and commercializing life-altering therapiesn

"Turing Pharmaceuticals, led by an outspoken former hedge fund manager (Martin Shkreli MSMB Capital Management), raised $90 million from its own CEO and some unnamed benefactors, at the same time buying a treatment for infectious disease to flesh out its pipeline.....

Shkreli's tenure at Retrophin came to an end in October when his board ousted him amid accusations of stock impropriety and concerns about his occasionally brash Twitter persona. But he managed to take three Retrophin assets with him on the way to founding Turing, picking up a hypertension drug his new company believes could treat autism, an intranasal formulation of oxytocin and a ketamine spray in development for depression. Moving forward, Turing will operate much like Retrophin, looking "to buy dollar bills for 50 cents," as Shkreli told Forbes in February."

There used to be website dedicated to showing all the links and ties to the bad people and bad actors in politics, business and banking, etc. from around the world..... it was pretty intricate and accurate as it was being put together by college students but it's been awhile... if I come across it I'll put the link up for you.
