In regard to the OP's question, I have read (and believe) that some African Americans are Republican because:

1. They are tired of being taken for granted by the Democratic Party.

2. They believe that discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations is a thing of the past.

3. They consider themselves to now be 100% equal. (If anyone does not like them, that is that person's problem. It does not detract from the fact that all ethnicities in 2018 now enjoy all the rights of Caucasians.)

4. They believe in Republican principles, viz., in 2018 America everyone can go as far as s/he wants depending on one's talents, ambition, and hard work.

5. African American Republicans, it is said, want to take advantage of all the many great opportunities that the government and corporations offer to African Americans and other ethnicities.

In short, African American Republicans want to look forward, not backward.
