To the extent that the general "African-American" community is devastated, the overwhelming cause TODAY is the rate of illegitimacy. Illegitimacy can be statistically correlated to essentially all of the major social ills infecting the "Black" community including, HS dropout rate, drug and alcohol addiction, incarceration, truancy, unemployment, and poverty generally, not to mention that children who were born to an unwed mother are five times more likely to have children out of wedlock than children of an intact family.

The secondary question is, what is the cause of the pandemic of illegitimacy? Does the "Black" community even recognize it as problematic?

Is it well-intentioned anti-poverty programs which, at one time, "punished" a family for having a man present? Programs which make single-parent familyhood, on the dole, an acceptable lifestyle choice?

The unfortunate fact for "Negro" apologists is that 3-4 generations ago, when the "Black" community was 3-4 generations CLOSER to slavery, Jim Crow, and all that, there was dramatically LESS illegitimacy than there is now. Indeed, in the 1930's the divorce rates and illegitimacy rates of white and black populations were virtually the same.

Is it race-hucksters who seemingly try to convince all "Black" people that if they are poor, unemployed and otherwise wretched, it is NOT THEIR FAULT, but rather it is the fault of the White society which excludes them? Is it the subculture itself that abandoned the shame and social stigma that used to be associated with bastardy.

Consider the lyrics of the old Supremes' song, "Love Child." The singer-narrator was refusing to engage in unmarried reproductive conduct with her male companion because she didn't want to bring another "love child" into this world. "...the name of shame I've been wearing - 'Love Child'..." Where is that shame? Why was it abandoned? Misplaced sympathy and compassion?

Is it the Supreme Court, which invented "Affirmative Action," thus convincing generations of "Blacks" that the only way they can hope to achieve some measure of success is if some positions in a school or company or agency are set aside for less-capable "Blacks"?

3 or 4 generations ago, with less illegitimacy, and prior to the anti-poverty programs, the poverty rate was even greater in black America than today. Blaming everything on illegitimacy and anti-poverty programs doesn't really make sense. If is obviously a complicated problem with many causes going back for many generations.
