I really don't think they could be measured in modern standards.The 'founders' were the radical left in the world of their time. They established what was the standard, the 'middle' for early America. It's been downhill since then.
Yes, they were "modern" in the sense that they did not accept the authority of the monarchy. Freedom of speech. Freedom against unlawful searches (in which they failed miserably, in particular as applied in modern times). And other freedoms.
But they accepted slavery and the genocide of the Native population.
Also, the Federalist Party did NOT become the Republican Party. The Democratic-Republican became both modern parties as its name implies. There is no modern party wanting a stronger federal government.
