Where did the myth that humans can automatically breathe through their mouths come from?

Babies with bilateral choanal atresia (blocked nose caused by bone or tissue) die of suffocation soon after birth. This proves that humans are obligatory nasal breathers and can only voluntarily mouth-breathe. It's not an automatic reflex at all.

Uh, yeah. Try freestyle swimming sometime.

Another bunch of freaks is on their way to join the club. Mouth breathers they are proudly going to call themselves it seems. With no letters left to assign to them what will it be then? Hieroglyphics?

The mouth and the nose are literally connected to each other.
Babies breathe mostly through their noses. However if their nose is blocked, a tube can be put into their mouth to help them breathe.

New born babies have a lot of things different to older children, their legs are not able to be used to walk, for example. This "proves" that humans can't walk. All humans. All fucking humans are incapable of walking because new born babies can't walk. "logic 101"

It is autonomic as developmental stages increase. Babies are born with the bare mimum of required operations in order to survive but more develop as the brain continues to develop.

That's as dumb as saying people don't have reflexes because you can punch a newborn in the face and it won't even try to avoid it.

If your sinuses act up and your nose is completely blocked you automatically breath through your mouth. No one taught you how to breathe through your mouth.

It is automatic because when you're running or working hard your body automatically switches to mouth breathing to increase the amount of oxygen you intake to compensate for the increased amount being used in your system. Only highly trained athletes can breathe their nose when the body is under heavy labor.

Babies don't really begin to breathe through their mouth until 3 to 4 months
