Jefferson founded the Republican Party in 1791 based purely on his belief in freedom from big liberal government. His concept is now more American than apple pie.

Without Republicans the competition would be between big government parties, i.e., liberals, socialist, communists, Nazis, despots, fascists, religious nuts, etc. These parties would compete by promising more and more welfare and less and less work until the "Road to Serfdom" finally led to some form of liberal totalitarianism.

We have Jefferson and Republicans to thank for our freedom.

But the Democrats are for "The People". The "Little guy".

The Democrats are the party of welfare dwellers, illegal aliens, taxes (never met a tax or illegal alien they didn't like), protectors of the rights of criminals instead of their victims (soft on crime), the lazy, socialized medicine, druggies, Wall Street (Obama and the Dems recieved the most from Wall Street campaign contributions), Union thugs, ambulance chasing lawyers, etc.

The party Jefferson founded was called the "Democratic-Republican" party, and it became today's Democratic Party, not today's Republican Party, which was nominally started by Lincoln.

SS emptied
Welfare state started.

Big stuff alright.

Social Security has protected the retirements of hundreds of millions of Americans for 75 years. Before Social Security, there was no such thing as retirement...... Thanks Dems

Welfare provides a safety net for all Americans. Without Social programs think of the US as Calcutta

I suggest a little research on Jeffersonian Democracy vis a vis the Federalist Party of Alexander Hamilton would do you some good. The party of Jefferson was the Democratic-Republican Party, not as you suggest the Republican Party and has no roots to the party of Reagan, Bush I & II or anyone running for the R nomination today.

To give Republicans their due...

Eisenhower did create the Interstate Highway system. They haven't done much for the country since

As a number of people have already noted, Jefferson's Democratic-Republican party evolved into the Democratic party, making this argument quite ahistorical. That being said, on the issue of federal power today's Republican party is closer overall to Jefferson's position than is today's Democratic party.

I also object to the characterization of the federalist position as "liberal". Liberalism as the concept is understood in American politics today wasn't a common concept until the 20th century (Liberalism by country - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). While there is of course some relation between the anti-Jefferson factions and modern liberals, it is no more fair to characterize people like Hamilton as "liberal" than it is to characterize the court that killed Jesus that way, as Herman Cain did (The Perfect Conservative | RedState). The concept of liberalism as we use it today simply didn't exist in those time periods.

The notion that the Republican party is the primary force protecting us from "religious nuts" is particularly amusing to me.
