So if people should be disallowed from obtaining a gun because they are mentally ill, what should be defined as mental illness? Is it someone who has had depression in the past, someone who is currently depressed etc.? And who is to determine who is mentally unstable? Which of the mentally ill should be discriminated against?

Crazy can be determined through common sense and general psychiatric practice. You don't need more laws.

Lock up crazies until it is determined they are no threat to themselves or others, and make the professionals liable when they sign off on their release..

Shoot the criminals, insane or not. What reason to keep them alive to hurt someone else?

If we ban guns from the mentally ill, that means no far left drone could ever own a gun..

Define mentally ill.

Far left drone.

Considering who makes the laws it seems to me that the far right would be labeled mentally ill.

The former USSR was famous for attacking the character of perceived political opponents and locking them away as "crazy".

After all, only crazy people would oppose "hope and change".

Yes, and the Democrats have much in common with the old Soviets.

After all, only crazy people would oppose "hope and change".

Well, for all its faults, the far right is more in tune with the Constitution than the far left could ever be, if they remain true to their agenda.

There is only one gun law that we need, and only one gun law that is valid in this country, and that is the Second Amendment.

They should say:

"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

It means that since a militia is necessary, government must not have any say in who can own and carry a gun or other such weapon.

Nothing else is needed.

"What should gun laws say if anything?"

The following measures and regulations are appropriate, reasonable, and Constitutional:

Concealed weapons prohibitions (save that of those licensed to carry concealed weapons)

Prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons

Prohibitions on the possession of firearms by the mentally ill

Laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings

NFA regulations and restrictions

Laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms, such as background checks to ensure felons and the mentally ill don't come into possession of firearms. (See DC v. Heller)

The measures and regulations below are unwarranted and would fail to pass Constitutional muster if subject to strict scrutiny of judicial review:

Licensing requirements (save that of concealed carry)

Permit and registration requirements

Waiting periods

Time-based purchase restrictions

Training requirements (save that of concealed carry)

Bans on types of magazines

Magazine capacity restrictions

Bans on specific types of firearms, such as AR platform rifles

Firearm bans predicated on cosmetic features such as pistol grips and detachable magazines
