So whereas the wealthier Americans already pay the majority of the taxes that support this country, I am asking congress to turn to them and ask them to help out even more, for most Americans can not afford a tax increase right now"

As opposed to making it sound like the wealthy are greedy and selfish...he could have presented in a way where the wealthier Americans are "helping" the problem.

Obama chose the divisive approach.

Hagel is one of those men, like John Kerry, who came back from military service convinced that the US is an evil nation that doesn't deserve a military. Of course he's going to help obama dismantle our defense. If he wasn't, he has no purpose in being appointed Secretary of Defense. obama doesn't appoint individuals who will do a good job in their positions, but those who will perform the worst.
