i think the number of "neo-cons/bible-thumpers/social conservative" etc types way outweigh the number of people who actually understand and follow conservatism.

basically, there's a shitload of people who call themselves 'conservative' but have policy ideas that are just an alternative form of progressivism, but they won't call themselves progressives, because they've been told that's a dirty word.
