Seems very generic and a broad range of tastes can be described as savory.

It is just that.
In the world of cooking, savory is basically anything that is not a desert.

I had always heard the term Savory to mean flavorful.

Now it seems to refer to a specific taste.
I understand spicy, sweet, salty, tart, bitter……but what would Savory taste like?

Use MSG seasoning and find out, all I can describe is that on a tomato in a steak hoagie and on the steak uplifts and seperates the flavor profile seemingly enhancing your tomato so you can taste it out of the mix of items then taste the beef flavor enhanced as well.
It won't enhance sweets/desserts though.
