It's a partial shutdown cuz the non-discretionary programs are unaffected, which I believe accounts for some 86% of the federal gov't. And there are some programs that have already been funded and will be unaffected. Below is a short description of what happens:

The U.S. Postal Service, busy delivering packages for the holiday season, wouldn't be affected by any government shutdown because it's an independent agency.

WORK GOES ON

Social Security checks will still go out. Troops will remain at their posts. Doctors and hospitals will get their Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements. In fact, virtually every essential government agency, like the FBI, the Border Patrol and the Coast Guard, will remain open. Transportation Security Administration officers will continue to man airport checkpoints.

But hundreds of thousands of federal workers will be forced off the job, and some services will go dark. Even after funding is restored, the political repercussions could be enduring.

According to a report by Democrats on the Senate Appropriations Committee, more than 420,000 federal employees deemed essential would continue to work without pay during a partial shutdown, including about 41,000 law enforcement and corrections officers and nearly 150,000 Homeland Security employees. Those working without pay — three days before Christmas — would include about 53,000 TSA workers, 54,000 Customs and Border Protection agents and officers and 42,000 Coast Guard employees.

As many as 5,000 Forest Service firefighters and 3,600 National Weather Service employees also would continue working, with the expectation that they will be paid back in full once the government reopens.

Meanwhile, more than 380,000 employees will be furloughed — including nearly all of NASA and Housing and Urban Development and 41,000 Commerce Department employees. About 16,000 National Park Service employees — 80 percent of the agency's workforce — would be furloughed, and many parks would close. Some parks already are closed for the winter.

Among those set to be furloughed: 52,000 staffers at the Internal Revenue Service, slowing analysis and collection of hundreds of thousands of tax returns and audits.

So, actually no big deal, except for the furloughed people. The people who have to work without being paid WILL eventually get paid, but how long this shutdown lasts seems to be open to question. Over a GD $5B wall that is a drop in the fiscal bucket that NONE of the pols in Washington actually care about. Make no mistake, this is 100% pure politics, and everybody on both sides will come out looking like the turds that they are.

Same thing that happens during any other day of the week: I get drunk. :alcoholic:

At least I have something to drink to now, though.

We get to see just how over bloated the government really is. We the people could get by, and likely do so better, with a 1/5 of what we're paying for now...

Possibly Trump has become convinced his base will begin to peel off if he hasn't delivered on His Wall before 2019?

20 Republican Senators are required to convict Trump of impeachment should the House move in that direction next year, and Trump may believe they will be easier to find if he doesn't deliver his wall?

The wall is small potatoes compared to the things President Trump has actually delivered. This republican wouldn't hesitate to vote for him in 2020.

Trump will be hard pressed to match Deb's numbers from 1920.

How many more major mistakes will the Russian Don have to make before you admit your mistake?

But we still have this.

Couldn't be any more of a "mistake" than running Hillary and losing the most important election of your lifetime.

What the hell were you people thinking? :21:

The bad part of this whole mess is once again how irresponsible our gov't is and how little respect the public has for both parties. Yeah sure, the Left supports their guys and the right supports theirs but there's a big bunch of people in the middle who don't really like either side. A recent Gallup poll taken a couple of weeks ago (Dec 3-12) shows that among many Americans our gov't and immigration are the top two problems facing the US right now, and together they add up to about 35%, with unifying the country coming in a distant 3rd at 8%. So, there's hay to be made for either or both parties to find a compromise and fairly soon too, cuz these numbers are going to get worse if the shutdown lasts for awhile. Trump might be making points with his base and Schumer/Pelosi are no doubt making points with theirs, but the person that wins the presidential election in 2020 will be the one who gets the most votes from those people in the middle. If I was Trump I wouldn't be getting too cocky, and neither should the Dems either.

Let's start with the army, cut the funding by at least 60 or 70%.

What happens in a partial government shutdown?

More stupidity than a complete shutdown,

Less than when it's business as usual.

Why would anyone think there's a meaningful choice between a crony-capitalist and political opportunists?

I think I might have been gullible enough to vote for Bill in '92, but my eyes have opened since then.

What about yours?

What happens?

The same thing that happens every Labor Day, Veterans Day, Christmas Day, etc....

I was also gullible enough to vote for Clinton then, but he decided that he wanted to take away my firearms with his Assault Weapons Ban.

Aside from banning bumpfire stocks which I care nothing about, Trump is for the most part "gun-friendly."

Trump appears safely in the NRA's corner; although he's flipped on some other wedge issues:

The House has adjured and a partial government shutdown at midnight is a certainty.

What will happen is non-vital parts of government will get a long holiday. And if history is a predictor of the future, government employees will get a long paid vacation.

The big question of course is what happens when Congress convenes in January with a republican house. Pelosi is determined not to give inch on Trump's wall. I expect a long government holiday. Many people will be very surprised to find out their trip to a national park or monument, purchase of a new home, getting a passport, getting information from most government agencies such as the IRS, and thousands of other services are effected.

Trump, the great deal maker said he's proud to be shutting down the government. I wonder if he'll feel the same way on Jan 15th.

"Republican incompetence on display: the federal government is about to be shut down for the third time during the two years of COMPLETE Republican control of that government. Congratulations" - Holder
