I guess the OP doesn't take into account the places that pay less than 10 dollars per hour, because that is all the jobs that are available (Walmart for instance).

If you earn less than a certain amount, you qualify for assistance, it's just that simple.

Now if 2, or even 5, perhaps even 10 Republicans flip.... do you think the Democrats are going to be able to unify a bunch of smaller parties to over turn the vote?

No, of course not. This is why in Europe the ruling party virtually ignores the smaller parties, like that almost don't even exist. Because practically..... they don't. They have no power at all.

All they do is fracture the opposition vote. A fractured opposition vote, means the ruling party is even more powerful than they ever could be, with a unified opposition.

I do not see one good result from proportional voting. Not one. If anything, you actually cause more of the problem you claim to be against.

Where is the win here? The German CDU/CSU party is pretty much what I'm talking about. They do whatever the heck they want. They have 310 votes in a 630 vote system. Yet they do whatever the heck they want.

Why? Because even though they don't even have the majority of votes, the other 320 votes are fractured between a half dozen smaller parties. They can't unified to oppose them. The ruling party has free reign.

Worse than that, the CDU/CSU has formed a coalition with the SPD. The Socialists, have a coalition with the right-wingers. combined the two largest parties have 503 votes. The opposition is less than even a spec on their radar.

Do you see my point? How is it any better? The two largest parties in Germany, linked together, making the proportional system completely irrelevant. NOTHING IS ANY DIFFERENT.

First, I don't 'blame' anyone for Iraq. It was the right move. If anything, Clinton should have dealt with Iraq in the 1990s, then Bush would not have had to.

They choose to not leave. And don't give me this crap that they 'couldn't leave' because it's funny how after the floods came, they were on boats and skiffs, leaving.

So somehow the people incapable of leaving before the Hurricane, where magically able to leave when it was flooded. And I'm not talking about rescue crews. I'm talking about people came crawling out of their homes, to leave, before any government rescue efforts even started.

You doubt that, just watch Spike Lee's Hurricane Katrina movie. Part 1. You'll see these able bodied people saying "We're not going anywhere". Suddenly.... they were going somewhere after the water fell.

If anyone in government is to blame, it would be the governor Kathleen Blanco. When the mayor of New Orleans called for help, Bush came straight to Louisiana, and offered Blanco the option of him activating the national guard, and sending in the military to take over rescue efforts. Blanco said "NO". She's a democrat, and opposed Bush. Bush said straight to Ray Nagin that this is what Blanco said. Nagins confirmed all of this.

So as far as I'm concerned, the evidence is very clear that you can blame many people, but not Bush, over Katrine. Not his fault.

I don't know if WIC (Women, Infants and Children) is a liberal welfare program or not, but I DO know that it has been a success and a great help for many people in the military (including myself).

In the mid 80's, I'd made E-4, was a 3rd Class Petty Officer, and decided to get married and start a family. Well, after crunching the numbers after my wife got pregnant, I figured out that I was going to have to get a second job or starve. When I went to talk to my supervisor, they asked why I wanted to get a civilian job. I told them it was because I didn't have enough money to make ends meet (formula is EXPENSIVE), and I needed more money. He then referred me to WIC, and because as an E-4, I was poor enough to qualify, we got WIC.

I also used it when I had my second child.

WIC does a great deal of good, especially for those new families in the military that are E-5 and below.

Republican welfare ideas actually do get people off of welfare. The left criticizes them for some minor reason but they do reduce the welfare rolls to some degree. The same can never be said about 'liberal' welfare programs. Those always seem to expand.

The biggest government corporate welfare today, is the Farm subsidy. Who pushed the farm subsidy? Democrats.

The second largest corporate welfare, is green energy grants. Who visited Solyndra?

Who pushes grants for medical research? Republicans? No, Democrats do. Then you complain about Big Pharm making profits on medicine created with government grants?

How many millions did we give to General Motors to make a battery for electric cars, and who pushed that?

In fact, who saved GM, by allowing GMAC to be declared a bank? And who give it to the Unions? Was that Republicans? I don't think so.
