Moreover, the share of fossil fuels—nearly 87 percent—has not budged due to a retreat in nuclear power over the same 15-year period.

Even a renewables Marshall Plan would face an unyielding deadline: To stay under 2C, the global economy must be carbon neutral—producing no more CO2 than can be absorbed by oceans and forests—by mid-century.

And who opposed nuke power? Carbon tax will crush the middle and low income, which would lead to less economic activity and thus less emissions. what a wonderful world.

Frankly its a race to see if WWIII, an asteroid, sun flare or rdean kills us first. CO2 emissions aren't even in the running.

Not to be a nit-picker, but nuclear power has not retreated in any 15 year period, let alone at all. Due to technology, plant upgrades, and improved maintenance nuclear power provides more power today than it has in the past, with fewer power plants.

Didnt Germany shut theirs off as did Japan.....CA is shutting theirs down.....

You spoke of the USA, I am just giving a fact. Our Nuclear Power plants produce as much power today, if not more, than they have in the past. At that, they do it with fewer plants. In 2016 the largest source of new electrical power was Nuclear Power. Watts Bar 2 came on line.

The future may not look promising but we do have 4 more Nuclear Reactors under construction and another 2 permits just approved.

Germany, yes, the current administration is hell bent on shoving "green energy" down the people's throats, at the expense of shutting down Nuclear power, while increasing the use of Coal.

Japan on the other hand is restarting it's Nuclear reactors.

Paris accord covers the world......thus pretty sure the article took a worldwide perspective.......and if we only produce the same amount as before it has fallen in total output

if we only produce the same amount as before it has fallen in total output
Is this you dictating that you are correct, by making a ridiculous declaration, "that the same, is less"?
The USA has increased Nuclear Power despite the loss of a dozen nuclear power plants.

Nuclear Power Today | Nuclear Energy - World Nuclear Association
US nuclear power plant performance has shown a steady improvement over the past 20 years, and the average load factor in 2012 was 81%, up from 66% in 1990 and 56% in 1980. US average capacity factors have been over 90% in most years since 2000 - 92.7% in 2015. This places the USA as the performance leader with nearly half of the top 50 reactors, the 50th achieving 94% in 2015-16 (albeit without China and South Korea in those figures). The USA accounts for nearly one-third of the world's nuclear electricity.

United States
In the USA, there are four reactors under construction, all new AP1000 designs. One of the reasons for the hiatus in new build in the USA to date has been the extremely successful evolution in maintenance strategies. Over the last 15 years, changes have increased utilization of US nuclear power plants, with the increased output corresponding to 19 new 1000 MW plants being built.
