If this Republican named Vitter is as bad with as much baggage as the left says he has, (and I am not saying he does, or does not, I do not know) he obviously should lose.

Polls over the last week show Edwards over Vitter by anywhere from 12 to 22 points. And Vitter's the one with the name recognition. Edwards meanwhile has the same last name as (but is unrelated to) a previous candidate who went to prison, so he's at a disadvantage among voters not paying attention who think he may be related, or be the same guy, Edwin Edwards. And in spite of the name thing he's still leading by 12 to 22.

Moreover Bobby Jindal's own (Republican) Lieutenant Governor, who ran for the office but was eliminated, actually crossed party lines and endorsed Edwards, finding his fellow Republican Vitter repugnant.

I agree. The GOP is pretty strong in Louisiana.

Vitter isn't losing because of Jindal though. Every candidate worked overtime to distance themselves from Jindal because of how poisonous he's been. He's done a damn fine job wrecking the Louisiana economy all on his own and suffered some pretty embarrassing political defeats despite the Governorship of Louisiana being one of the most powerful governorships in the nation.

Vitter is losing because of his past, pure and simple. He's got a particularly nasty reputation as a crony politics sort of guy with a penchant for temper tantrums and vengeance. The fact he was waiting for a prostitute to call instead of attending a service honoring the troops is just the final straw.

The reason the GOP is looking at losing the Govenor's mansion is that Vitter has a tight reign on the party down there after ousting Jindal's control over the state GOP. He should have been knocked out in the open primary.
