So it's been nearly a week and the police and media are unable to determine the motive for the murderous carnage.

I wondered about the ISIS claim, but with no sign of jihad, I too was stumped.

Then, this morning, I heard a story on an NPR station (I'm not finding a link) about a branch of radical jihadists in Catalonia, near Barcelona, Spain. The Imam encouraged followers to embrace a western lifestyle in order to blend in, including drinking alcohol and eating bacon. I got the impression of a more clandestine version of Islamic terrorism. Leave 'em baffled for Allah? They were thought to be responsible for attacks in Europe before their mosque was shut down.

This May, 2017 NPR article states outright that when ISIS claims responsibility for a connection to terrorism in the West, they're telling the truth: What Does It Mean When ISIS Claims Responsibility For An Attack?

My best guess with what I know at this point is he turn radical jihadist, inspired by the teachings of that Imam.

Had Paddock been to Spain recently? Or did the Imam move to the states? I too am keeping the question of conversion in my mind, but he seemed such a loner and with no real social media presence, it's a little hard to imagine a long distance conversion.

Good point, I wasn't thinking directly influenced, but maybe he heard about the movement.

You'd think they'd find some sort of online presence. You'd have to go to great lengths to mask it.

I'm still not anywhere near sure, but it struck me as a possibility when I heard the story about the mosque in Spain.

Hell we haven't heard anything medical as of yet, hell for all we know he could have developed a brain tumor or had long term undiagnosed syphilis which will affect the brain.

That was actually my thinking thus far, but the ISIS claim and the story of the undercover jihadists stuck me as a real possibility.

Well at least we can take solace that he may not have been a Rachel Madcow lover and Bernie supporter.

Even sleeper cells, when activated, claim responsibility on behalf of some group. There is nothing in this case.

No reason he couldn't have been both and taken the double header of assholery.

Agree, but then, according NPR, when ISIS takes claim for an event in the West, they are always right. Why would that all of sudden change?

I shall assume that he was my political polar opposite and consume only the news that affirms that assumption.

That's how we're doing it these days, right?

I hate to use a cliche phrase but...consider the source. NPR are a bunch of lefties. Lefty law clearly states that when a threatened community (everyone except white males) make a claim, it should be taken seriously. Especially when that claim involves a white male.

To be clear, the NPR article regarding ISIS claims predates the Vegas murders. The radio story about undercover jihadist aired this morning.

Seriously though, it seems to me at this stage that he did what he did because he was mentally ill and an asshole. I'm not sure that trying to assign a motive to it beyond that is really all that productive.

The time and energy the government puts into playing criminal whack-a-mole with gun-control laws should really be put into serious research on the brain and mental health.

Vegas murders motive?

Well, let's see.....

Here we might have a motive, and this comes from the horse's mouth.

Surely the Sheriff knows a thing or two more than we know, right?

He talks about the possibility of Paddock's radicalization.

I am trying to put this in nicely, but this is just ONE reason to repeal the second amendment on the grounds it's outdated and invalid.

I say he was mentally ill no matter what the motivation. I admit to wanting the know that motivation, particularly if it came via an enemy of the United States.

Re research on mental health, I wonder if it should be less research and more of a willingness to put troubled folks, once fully and properly adjudicated, into mental institutions, which need not be the awful places as they sometimes were in the past. This seems to me well within a state's right to legislate. The alternative seems to be to let the jails handle them or they walk into walls homeless. Of course, I doubt that would have stopped the asshole in Vegas. Others, perhaps. Tons of petty crime, absolutely. A tricky civil rights issue to be sure.

My initial statement about sleeper cells remains. Once again, with regard to ISIS, consider the source.
ISIS claimed responsibility the casino shooting in the Philippines, that proved to be untrue.
ISIS, as an organization is in full retreat mode.
They have lost 90% of the territories that they controlled in the ME. In addition to national governments focusing on them, other terrorist organizations have a bulls eye on them.
If no one claims an incident, what is the harm in claiming it for themselves? They get their name in the press, a name whose terrorist market value is quickly losing value. I say they are grasping at straws. I also say a lazy media searching for a big name to catch the ear or eye of a viewer will use their name with only a modicum of true evidence.
