USA impotent against pirates ?

how many of these ships have been sank? there is no profit in sinking the ships...

so do tell how many have been sank?

you will never stop pirates....simple as that.... riches float by one of the poorest nations in the world....and you expect them just to sit there and starve as millions float by?

Well, call me crazy, but yeah......I do.

RGS hit the nail on the head here. This is a very simple problem to solve. It DICTATES the swift, callous, brutal death of as many of the pirates as is needed to get the message across. Start killing them now, and when it appears they've gotten the message, continue killing them until you can locate no more.

Collateral damage is expected, and will occur. That is the risk the traders shoulder.

The US isn't tough enough to get it done, so we need to turn it over to someone who is, and let those companies who chose to take the risks pay for the protection that is required.

I guess that is a cheaper alternative than nation building.

no mini they are using small boats to board ships with small crews...

They have bigger ships. Or do you honestly think a rubber dingy or speed boat can get 300 miles into the Indian Ocean? Once again the main reason no one fires on the pirates is because they have rocket propelled grenades. A couple of those into the water line and you are in big trouble. And if you are carrying oil?

Once the ship starts firing on the pirates do you honestly think they are going to just say " damn" and leave? And if you hit any what exactly do you think will happen?

This is a military operation not a civilian one.

If there ever was a "war" that could be won with a single fighter jet, this could be it.

i note sgt has still not said how many have been sank?

Ohh ya, because well so many ships have actively FIRED on the pirates right? You are amazingly stupid. Do you honestly think if a ship fires on pirates that those pirates with rocket propelled grenades and machine guns are going to say " damn" lets run away"?

do yall really want to discuss this...then lets do it...

first the ships are in international waters and have very little protection...the ships are not set up to protect themselves..they prefer to insure the crew and cargo and let the insurance pay the ransoms....

put defensive crews on the ships....but wait that would cost the owners of the ships money.....

getting a better picture now?

Also, I think that's in violation of International Law.
Ah, yes.....let's invoke International Law!!!

After all.....what're the chances the Somalis can afford lawyers??!!!

No Sham.....I'm with you and Bones on this one.

Having now given it some more thought, I'm pretty sure if we just ignore the pirates, they'll go away.

Would have been nice to let the Adams know that if they paid no attention to the pirates, they might still be alive today, but c'est la mort, I suppose.

Can't believe I didn't think of it before.

The pirates aren't going to just go away until the Somali people can make a living, and frankly, probably not even then.

I have little doubt we could sink every shop, bomb ever village and hang ever pirate and there'd be piracy on the high seas again within a year or so.

Deperate people take desperate measures when they have NOTHING TO LOSE.

So now we do nothing in the face of the rights of somali pirates
The USA dealt with pirates before why cant we do it now?

The First Barbary War (1801–1805), also known as the Barbary Coast War or the Tripolitan War, was the first of two wars fought between the United States of America and the North African Muslim states known collectively as the Barbary States. These were the independent Sultanate of Morocco and Tripoli, which was a quasi-independent entity nominally belonging to the Ottoman Empire.

Shades of 1976.

We have a press that will scream to high heaven the first time we smoke a boat load of pirates. The world will see pictures of dead people dressed in civilian cloths floating in the water. there weapons having sank to the bottom of the sea. "With the Head line UN Say US targeted a boat load of fishermen."

We have an administration that does not have the leadership skills to handle any situation, let alone the list of several serious situation going on at this time.

We have a war weary public, that thinks Just because we struggled with an 2 occupations that we must not be A powerful nation anymore. They do not understand that an occupation is not what or military is great at. Dismantling hostile targets is. Destroying Nations Conventional Armies is. Wasting pirates is.

Basically we have the means, the and the Capability, but we lack the Political will to do just about anything.
Yeah....that's what we lack.....political-will.

Stopping the piracy may be the simplest problem to solve in the past 50 years.

1. Close the waters to ALL non-commercial traffic, for as long as it takes
2. Start killing pirates and sinking ships, all collateral damage is acceptable due to Step #1
3. Continue killing and sinking until piracy stops
4. When the pirates come to negotiate a cease fire, promising to stop their piracy, kill them
5. Open waters back to non-commercial navigation, and continue patrolling, killing any pirates you come across, regardless of collateral damage
(Cue the Republican War Anthem!!!)

You don't have a solution, do you?
