USA impotent against pirates ?

So now we do nothing in the face of the rights of somali pirates
The USA dealt with pirates before why cant we do it now?

The First Barbary War (1801–1805), also known as the Barbary Coast War or the Tripolitan War, was the first of two wars fought between the United States of America and the North African Muslim states known collectively as the Barbary States. These were the independent Sultanate of Morocco and Tripoli, which was a quasi-independent entity nominally belonging to the Ottoman Empire.

Yes and contrary to the popuular myth we paid and paid and paid those pirate to leave us alone.

Yes we invaded one group of North African pirates and yes we kicked their asses.

But we also paid ransoms for captives and hostages, too, just like the reat of Europe had been doing for ages.

STamping out piracy is like trying to stamp out cockroaches.

You can kill everyone you can find, but for every one you kill there's ten more you miss.

do yall really want to discuss this...then lets do it...

first the ships are in international waters and have very little protection...the ships are not set up to protect themselves..they prefer to insure the crew and cargo and let the insurance pay the ransoms....

put defensive crews on the ships....but wait that would cost the owners of the ships money.....

getting a better picture now?

We are already paying for a military presence in the area if we are going to continue to do so we might as well make use of it.
5 inch guns can shoot over the horizon I would think they can use telemetry from drones to hit targets as well.

You are the one that doesn't get it. Announce a no sail zone. Send in the Navy. Sink EVERY SHIP that is not identified as commercial or nationality. Target every Podunk village and port on the Somali coast burn them out. Destroy every boat you find.

The most that civilian shipping companies can do is provide small arms to the supposed guards of their ships. The pirates have access to heavy military equipment. If they fire on the pirates the pirates can SINK the ship.

ALL funding for the patrols should be at the expense of those companies who use the routes for trade. If you want to go through there without a military escort, your chances of being the "collateral damage" I mention above are GREATLY increased.

6-10 F-18s could effectively secure the entire area, with the capability of response to any point in under 5 minutes.

We have the capability to allow a serviceman sitting at a desk in Dallas, Texas to send a small nuclear weapon up the sphincter of a muslim 7,000 miles away, but we can't stop piracy?

This isn't 16th century Spain, is it?

RGS is right....we simply don't have the stomach for it.

It is a helluva lot of water to cover out there. It is not exactly Lake Gitcheegoome. Common sense would dictate (not that it does that much anymore) that recreational yachters, for now, need to stay the hell out of those waters (duhhh!).

Actually, Gitcheegoome has a surface area of 31,820 miles. Not too much different.

you do realize the ships can take another route that is longer and more costly but prefer to run the risk of the shorter route....

stomach for what...being police for the world?

why arent you conservative for the individual ships doing what it takes to protect themselves....

noise cannons would be a good start...but suddenly yall are all for a nanny government to the world

You are not even worth the effort to explain about world trade. Once again you are part of the reason we still have pirates.

Also, I think that's in violation of International Law.

Once again, ALL the Companies can do is small arms. The pirates have access to HEAVY military arms. The Company ship fires on the speed boat. The Pirates SINK the ship. Ya that solves all kind of problems.

Yeah.....with all o' those Young Republicans storming recruiters' office, you'd think the U.S. Military would be more-than-capable of handling every little issue (that get "conservatives'" panties all-bunched-up).

Bones,

The pirates aren't running alongside, jumping on a net, and climbing aboard wielding swords and clubs.

I'm all for each ship being equipped with defensive weaponry, but stopping these pirates is going to require some fairly substantial OFFENSIVE weaponry.

Let the companies conducting trade pay for the support of some air cover and the ordinance they would need. If the risk is greater than the reward, they're free to find another route, or vehicle for delivery.

how many of these ships have been sank? there is no profit in sinking the ships...

so do tell how many have been sank?

you will never stop pirates....simple as that.... riches float by one of the poorest nations in the world....and you expect them just to sit there and starve as millions float by?
