TSA manage to make a 3 year old wheelchair bound baby sob

 Apparently she got upset because her stuffed animal had to go through the metal detector. The parents should have known this to be the case before hand.

Fauxrage.

Oh yeah...let's attack the kid and the parents. Very nice Ravi.

Stuffed animal 'Lamby' was confiscated
Her stuffed animal, ‘Lamby,’ had been scanned via X-ray and had not been returned to her.

So it was more than just going through the metal detector.

Oh bullshit. They sent the toy through xray and she threw a temper tantrum just like kids do on a regular basis. There's something wrong about using your child as a political tool, tool.

Have Americans really become so paranoid that they need to allow these horrid people to scare a little girl looking forward to a trip to Disneyland?
Why the need to swab the wheelchair? Its a wonder they didn't pull her pants down to try and find an imaginary bomb stuffed down her pants.

I would not describe Americans as paranoid about this issue. If Americans want to travel by air, they most certainly do have to allow these horrid petty criminals to continue to grope, molest, and terrorize the young, the old, the helpless, the guiless, and those just plain desperate to get to their destinations. The Fed is constantly entertaining expansion of these "services" to rail and bus transportation, as well as implementing highway stop points. If you fail to comply, or gainsay the TSA "officials" you can be denied access to your flight, be placed on a 'no fly' list that will result in denial of ability to fly anywhere ever again, escorted from the airport, detained and subjected to even more heinous treatment, or even jailed.
I know I feel so much safer knowing that some three-year-old crippled child's wubby has been dusted for explosive and she's undergone a procedure that would land normal people on the sex offenders' registry.

exactly. I'm sure the TSA handled it as badly as could be handled after that point, but initially why the issue to begin with?

Oh b/c parents are stupid.

Yeah, stupid parents. They should have known that a metal wheelchair would set off the alarm. Maybe they should fashion a sling and just pack the kid on their backs next time. Damn those stupid parents. They should have anticipated that their three-year-old disabled baby would have to be strip-searched.

This is an example of why I favor law which make it illegal to record encounters with law enforcement. Having a video camera just encourages people to exhibit bad behavior and then cry foul when the law responds.

I've flown dozens of times with small children. I've never had a bad encounter with TSA. Why? Oh that's right, I take the time beforehand to explain to my kids what will happen and why. Even a 3 year old can understand "Teddy has to ride the escalator before he can get on the plane"

Disagree about the not video taping, but the teddy in the escalator is just common sense. People know the drill by now so yes, the parents are at fault, imo.

Once again I would like more fyi. It mentioned in the article that the father is an attorney.

Were the parents hypervigilant? I can't decide.

I believe it was stated that there were no problems at the destination airport--Orlando?

Maybe something is wrong at the first airport--St. Louis?

I live in Arkansas. I've flown in and out of St Louis dozens of times, probably more like hundreds since 99% of the time I fly out of Branson and catch a connector in St Louis. Never encountered an issue there, nor really saw one.

I'm not saying that TSA agents are perfect at their jobs, but come on, anytime you deal with a child, especially one with medical or emotional problems it's going to be difficult . Add in parents who are more concerned with videotaping for evidence in a trial than they are in their child's well being and well that's a recipe for disaster.

Seriously, who is even thinking about such a thing when their child is distraught? Not me, my concern then is how can I fix this, not "How can I make money from this"

I admit that I didn't read the article very closely. I do recall that the mother said, 'I don't let anyone touch my child...'

In the same situation--I don't think I would be as informed of my 'rights' and would have been focused on calming my child and boarding the plane. I don't know --if it is determined that something inappropriate took place then there should be consequences. Yes, we have a litigious society. It gets old---the infinite number of lawsuits that are publicized every day.

You don't have to go through security at the destination airport so I'm not sure why that was even brought up.

I think they were talking about the return trip when Orlando would have been the originating airport and St Louis the arriving.

Update: TSA apologizes and please note in the article that the family had actually made it thru the screening without incident.

Though they got through the TSA security checkpoint without incident, a TSA agent pulled the family aside to screen Lucy’s wheelchair further for a pat down and swabbing her mobility device.

This is a key point. Looks like we had some power tripping going on.

TSA later admitted girl should never have been threatened with patdown

And from the updated article:

Mr Forck, an attorney, told Fox News that he knew it was legal to record the event and said that if the same instance had occurred outside the setting of an airport, it would be illegal.

‘But you put a TSA badge on and now all of a sudden, it’s okay,’ he told the station.

The father added that he and his wife were not trying to make a scene, but instead were looking out for the well-being of their daughter.

The TSA later admitted its agents should never have threatened to patdown the little girl and apologized to the family.

'While no pat-down was performed, we will address specific concerns with our workforce,' a spokeswoman told MailOnline.

And let's remember who we are talking about in this thread...

Parents' fury as TSA 'detains' their wheelchair-bound daughter, 3, as they're trying to fly to Disney World for family vacation | Mail Online

I gotta say, that as much as I think the TSA is necessary, I am sick of them having to apologize for the fuckups by their agents.

We need to just get rid of all of them and let the military personnel who are coming home take over those jobs.

In my dealings with TSA they have a job to do and the easier you make it for them to do their job the faster you will be on your way. If you get pulled out of line, cooperate, do what they ask and you will be quickly cleared

The travellers who insist on being a badass and bitching about every request seem to have the hardest time

so it seems as if the matter is resolved.

'A few' employees need clarification on policies.

I would have been intimidated in a similar situation. Good that these people responded more assertively.

No doubt true, but how many time now has the TSA had to come back and say something about TSA agents didn't follow policy? It just gets old.

But I agree about troublemakers. Same group that seem to have problems with police when pulled over.

If you act like a dick you will be treated like a dick

I think the problem is that TSA agents are given little lattitude on how they can treat a flyer. The book says ....do this and they follow to the letter

Makes for PR disasters like this one

When you treat innocent people like terrorists you can expect to have negative feedback.
