trump would abandon NATO if re-elected

Quite true, but do you really and truly believe that we will be safer by tucking our tail between our legs and pulling back?
Is there some threat to us we can't handle from home? Looking after our patch isn't pulling back, it's simply placing regional responsibility to those that actually live in those regions.

trump doesn't care about NATO. He said so himself, many times. He knows if he abandons NATO, Putin would have a easy road to take back the old Soviet countries, and more. trump is the most dangerous man in the world right now. He has assembled a cult that is will to do anything he asks, including acts of violence and intimidation. He is the danger from within that our founding fathers warned us about.
Lol! Some worthless leftist rag opinion piece.
Trump says a lot of shit - doesn't mean he'd withdraw from NATO. He just wants other members to pay their fair share.
And I agree with him 100%.
Without US dollars, NATO would implode.
It's the same concept that these fools claimed that Trump is buddy buddy with N. Korea and Russia. When, in fact, he is attempting to prevent global nuclear war.

NATO was created to prevent Soviet expansion into Western Europe.
Russian expansion went dormant during the period 1991-2008 (Georgia War), then until 2014 (Ukraine), then 2022 (Ukraine).

It's back.

The Soviet Union no longer exists.
And a re-awakening and strengthening Russia has emerged in its place, complete with dictatorial strong-man (Putin).
What is left of the once feared Soviet Army is getting their arse handed to them by a hillbilly army in The Ukraine.
Left un-checked they will regain the initiative and will probably win and then turn on the Baltic States and Poland. No Sale.
Europe is no longer vulnerable...
You are as wrong-as-wrong-can-be about that.
They can stop sucking at the American teat.
Western Europe has had 79 years to rebuild while crouching under the American Shield.

They do, indeed, need to do much more with respect to their own defense, but we are going to have to buy them that time.

It's Over ... go home.
(1) No, "it" is NOT "over"

(2) We ARE "home"... we just happen to care deeply about the lands of our ancestors and where our distant cousins still live

-----------------

Every time America hides its head in the sand and stupidly reverts to Isolationism for a decade or two we end-up paying dearly.

We "hid" on our side of the pond after the 1900 time frame and had to deal with a world war in (1914-) 1917-1918.

We "hid" on our side of the pond after the 1920 time frame and had to deal with a world war in (1939-) 1941-1945.

And in both examples we paid a horrible price in both American blood and treasure because we lacked foresight.

No... we're not "going home"... if you're our adversary, we're gonna be - and stay - in your face with all our power and might.

OUR problem is that we're a MegaPower that lacks "continuity of strategic policy" - a shortcoming attributable to politics.

Rather than running home with our tail between our legs and hiding and hoping to be the last eaten by the crocodiles...

We need to do a better job of deterring aggression and picking our fights and not engaging in knee-jerk reactions.

Leaving the place where the hot war has been over for nearly 80 years, and the Cold War for over a generation, and making the Euros pay for their own military defense, is "tucking our tail between our legs" in what way?

trump is a dictator "wannabe."

If NATO is a defensive alliance, who is it defending against in Iraq, Libya, Syria, Afghanistan, Yemen ? Who is always attacking NATO, eh?

it is not smart ….
Wholeheartedly agree.

It is NOT smart to abandon NATO.

The time of simple-minded 19th Century Isolationism is long-since over.

The leftover residue of that mindset cost us extremely heavily beginning in 1917 and again in 1941.

Mind you... we need to do a MUCH better job in our foreign relations... but NATO is The Smart Move in the 21st Century.

trump leaving NATO would be a gift to Poootin. He might get his hotel in Moscow if he did that. World democracies need to be protected from trumpism and MAGA.

This thread and the OP is a LIE.

TRUMP STRENGTHENED NATO, so says the NATO Secretary, Stoltenberg.

I remember Trump was really pissed that Germany was buying Putin's gas funding his military, and we're there paying $25b or so a year to protect Germany from Russia. It made no sense.

It is certainly true that European NATO countries now are increasingly aware that they cannot rely on the U.S. — especially if Trump is re-elected (a real possibility) — and that they must take up the slack to ensure Putin does not win his war on Ukraine.

Fortunately, Germany and virtually all others are now increasing their own military budgets and contributions to Ukraine. If one counts their aid to Ukrainian refugees as well, Europe in the last quarter of 2023 more than matched U.S. aid. I suspect this year we will see European NATO countries getting their act together and even take tough action against Hungary or other internal opposition, and decisively help Ukraine. I for one hope so.

Just as now it is Russia freezing and not Europe, the immense economic strength of Europe compared to Russia should make it possible for Europe itself to provide Ukrainians the weapons they need to stop Putin and defeat him. Even if Putin-lover Trump or Republicans abandon Ukraine, it is at least possible that Europe will come through and surprise the world.

A recent Atlantic Council article may be a bit optimistic, but shows how serious European states are considering the possibility that they may have to “go it alone.”
