It is designed to land a Marine Expeditionary force and move inland with convoys of vehicles, including road clearing assets.
The USS Wasp was ordered to leave The Republic of Dominica its mission and deployed to Puerto Rico after complaints of officials, including the mayor's, and the installation of a three-star General with pull in the Pentagon. This doubled the capacity of the US military ability to respond to the emergency in Puerto Rico when the USS Wasp joined with the USS Kearsarge.
