Trade Deals With Asia Cost US Jobs and Lead to Slavery

Except that this is false.

Studies of labor conditions in Asia have concluded that when Western multinationals hire in Asia, they pay better and treat their workers better than local companies. This is also generally true of Western companies that offshore their production to local companies.

What has also been found in empirical studies is that when pressure from such criticism has led to the closure of Western plants in Asia, it has not only led to an increase in poverty and unemployment, there have been very adverse social effects, such as an increase in women turning to prostitution to make ends meet.

It has also coincided with the greatest reduction in global poverty in human history. In 1980, about 30% of the world's population lived in abject poverty. Today it is about 8%. Why? Because of capitalism.

This criticism has historically been leveled by socialists, anti-capitalists and the left around the world and in the US. Interesting that it is now coming from the right. The American right used to be proud of capitalism. Now, parts of the American right criticize capitalism like socialists do.

May I present, if you are not already familiar with him, Sir James Goldsmith. He explains the problems with creating a global market for labor.

Since you haven't linked any sources I have to ask if the studies you refer to make any mention of where US companies source their raw materials and the conditions of those workers?

Sure, lets export our jobs to Asia so slave labor can be employed. Critics said unions and US workers cost too much. Critics say automation cost US jobs. Nope. Slave labor is free. How can you compete against that?

The funny thing here is that the conservatives go round the world demanding that Capitalism be introduced everywhere. Then when Capitalism doesn't give the US an unfair advantage, they get all pissy and start hating on Capitalism.

So, which is it? You like Capitalism or you don't? You want to compete with other countries or you don't?
