Top House Republican calls for spending freeze
2 hours ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — The top Republican in the House is seizing on the latest spike in unemployment to call for a freeze on government spending and to urge President Barack Obama to veto a $410 billion spending bill.

Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, said the jump in unemployment to 8.1 percent and the loss of 651,000 jobs in February is a sign of a worsening recession that demands better solutions from both parties.

Boehner criticized the spending bill as chocked full of wasteful, pork-barrel projects. The Senate postponed a vote on the bill until Monday amid the criticism.

Boehner said he hoped Obama would veto the bill. He urged the president to work with House Republicans to impose a spending freeze until the end of this fiscal year.

Although I do agree with the concept stopping the funding of programs that will not aid to resolving our recession, I do not agree with a complete spending freeze that Boehner is advocating.

A turn to infrastructure, education, and reduction on military spending(in terms of new equipment) is more in line than a million dollar pool that did pop up in the original stimulus bill.

In any case, what is Boehner's solution? Just sit around and watch the marvel of our market system shed jobs faster than Fido can breed fleas? Until the Republicans can come up with solutions for down markets, I think I will generally "follow the donkey" on this one.

Just watch out for the farmer's Gold!!

Have you ever tried to fix a car that had so many problems, that in the end you spent more repairing it than you would have by just replacing it? Sometimes trying to fix things just isn't worth the cost. This analogy isn't perfect, but there is enough evidence that throwing money at this mess may well do more harm than good.

People are finding that they need to cut spending just to make it. What is it that makes so many people think the government can fix all of this by spending more?

Focus the spending on creating jobs. Jobs get you money you spend. Spending makes the economy work.

FDR's WPA turned it around back in the Grape Depression.

we shall become as corrupt as Europe .

It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes.

Thomas Jefferson

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the

Thomas Jefferson said in 1802:

'I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than
standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control
the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and
corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all
property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers
conquered.'

we are so far away from being as free as we became after we kicked England out
It might take some blood shed to fix us.

Yeah and it only took 10 years and a world war to do it.

So are you suggesting throwing away our Free capitalist system and empowering (GASP) A European Socialist model.

Where is PubiliusI when you need him!! He will put you back into place on such Blasphemy!! Next, you are going to suggest that "In God we trust" does not imply God is in the money supply!!!

What is being proposed currently is an Omnibus Bill - spending above and beyond the original budget.

To veto this ridiculous pork barrel bill and put a freeze and current budget increases is very sound governing. Essential programs will still be funded - it will be the special interest pig trough that will be cut off.

$450 billion in across-the-board tax cuts would have far more positive impact on the immiediate economy than a $450 billion omnibus pork bill.

That puts Democrats in a pickle though - I believe a great many of them know this, but to come out and cut taxes to improve the economy would go against the foundation upon which they stand - bigger government to solve more problems for the growing masses who say they cannot make it themselves.

We told you that your party was bankrupting the country back then. What did you say? Bush has to fight the war!!! We said, "Tom Delay and him are spending on a lot more than defense."

And you defended all their programs.

Do you deny their spending helped cause the mess our country is in?

And you claim that it was the Democrats the last 2 years? How when Bush veto'ed everything they did? Liars.

Why else did they lose so badly in 06 and 2008?

And you guys think I'm dumb. Why, because I don't fall for your bullshit?

Because I have a memory? Thank god for the Internet.

This is an awesome example of why there will not be change in Washington. No political party will take the high road. The excuses are pretty much the same....the other party did it so we get to as well...it does not matter if what the other party did was incorrect.

Why is Obama spending money? To get us out of Bush's recession?

Why did the GOP spend all that pork in 2005 & I didn't even show you 2006 yet.

And lets discuss those pork projects. Bridges to knowhere that would help a few rich people including Ted Stevens himself.

Sounds exactly like the GOP plan.

Are you rich? Then you must be a dumb mother fucker. Seriously. Slave. House slave. Got it good and don't want to upset massa?

Stop and listen to yourself. Bush ignored America infrastucture for 8 years. Bridges, roads, levy's.

Yet you voted and defended spending $10 billion a month in Iraq?

And no, the government is always going to spend on social programs.

I say Obama's programs are going to have very little waste/fraud/corruption.

Bush's fraud went unchecked, until now.

Will you find an occasional corruption case? Sure, but a fraction of Bush's. Wanna bet?

You'll show me one or two slide show's for classroom's pork spending and say you are even with the billions bush wasted in Iraq? On purpose?

The socialized the losses and privatized the profits. What's wrong with the government getting a return on their investment? That is your government you know. Corporations fucked America up, in cohoots with the GOP. It wasn't liberal policies.

The bankers who planned the $750 bill bankrobbery planned long ago to blame Freddy & Fanny. Or do you think they aren't smart enough to plot and scheme? Or are they too richous to do that? Have you read up on Rothchilds and Rockafellors and JL Gould's of the world? The Robber barons are back.

So expect Obama to push back. He won't get in bed with the rich like Bush did.

And if you don't like the Democrats social programs, maybe you are a Republican and don't know it yet. :eusa_shhh:

You forgot about filabusters.

Though seemingly forgotten by most TV talking heads, it was only three years ago, when the Republicans had control of both the White House and Congress - and "filibuster" was a dirty word.

It was usually coupled with "obstructionist" amid demands that any of George W. Bush's proposals deserved "an up-or-down vote."

Yet now, with the Democrats holding the White House and Congress, the Republicans and the Washington press corps have come to view the filibuster fondly, as a valued American tradition, a time-honored part of a healthy legislative process.

Focus the spending on creating jobs. Jobs get you money you spend. Spending makes the economy work.

FDR's WPA turned it around back in the Grape Depression.

We had nearly a decade of 15% or greater unemployment during the Great Depression. I don't know what would have happened had FDR not spent on Public Works programs. But let's not suggest that he turned things around due to those moves, because it didn't happen. Maybe, it kept things from getting even worse. On the other hand, maybe it made things worse.

Creating a few jobs so people can buy things will only help if everyone else can afford to buy things. Right now, nobody can afford to buy anything because there just aren't any savings to draw from.

Doing nothing but stopping federal spending is a better idea than anything the government has done so far. Letting the market correct itself is exactly what needs to happen right now. Bailouts and spending packages simply prolong and worsen the agony of the recession.

Most people don't have confidence that they'll have their jobs in a month or year, so we are tightening up the purse strings.

And we were told we spend too much. Now they say they need us to spend?

The solution is to bring manufacturing jobs back home. My brother says you can't bring them all home, nor do we need to, but we need to come up with a number. Let's say, 70% of everything sold in America needs to be manufactured here in America. That way, if we get a really cheap engine from China, they ship it here and we essemble it here, with American workers.

Now don't pick on my example or percentage, because I'm just talking hypothetical. The point is, just like every other country, manufacturing is vital.

We went from the largest creditor nation to the largest debtor nation in the world. What happened? We don't make anything to sell anymore. Same thing happened to England before they lost their standing as world superpower. Same is happening to us.

PS. The Great Depression was caused by the Robber Barons, just like today's crisis was caused by the Haloburton's, Bankers and Exxon's.

Bush didn't spend any money on infrastructure the last 8 years. The country needs a facelift. And, doing it now will help each state get thru this tough time, pay unemployment benefits, etc.

We'll agree on NO bullshit wasteful pork, but not that the government should sit and do nothing. That's insane.

Construction companies eliminated 104,000 jobs. Factories axed 168,000. Retailers cut nearly 40,000. Professional and business services got rid of 180,000, with 78,000 jobs lost at temporary-help agencies. Financial companies reduced payrolls by 44,000. Leisure and hospitality firms chopped 33,000 positions.

We can't afford infrastructure spending right now. Doing nothing so that the market can correct itself is not insane. Wasting trillions of dollars in an attempt to spend your way out of a recession, now that's insane.
