"Washington (CNN) – A majority of Americans think the federal government poses a threat to rights of Americans, according to a new national poll.

Fifty-six percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Friday say they think the federal government's become so large and powerful that it poses an immediate threat to the rights and freedoms of ordinary citizens. Forty-four percent of those polled disagree.

The survey indicates a partisan divide on the question: only 37 percent of Democrats, 63 percent of Independents and nearly 7 in 10 Republicans say the federal government poses a threat to the rights of Americans."

Those on the right believe Government based on 1. consent of the governed, 2. limited government…limited in purpose, but not weak: powerful in protecting rights, 3. responsible Constitutionalism: the government is responsible to the people, not responsible for them. (should not take on too many jobs.)

For those on the left, the government must become the Administrative State, involved in every aspect of our lives.

Looks like most folks have made their choice.

I agree that America is center to the Right...However, Obama and the Democrats are center to the left.

These two forces will have to meet sometime....There will only be one winner.

So if those on the right believe in personal liberties, unalienable rights, personal responsibility and accountability, a free market economy, and want the government to secure their rights and then leave them alone to govern themselves, they have hijacked the center?

And anybody on the right, religious or not, who exercises his or her Constitutionally protected right to petition their government or ask for redress of grievances is dangerous? Do you feel the same about those on the Left--NAMBLA, PETA, Green Peace, Code Pink, American Atheists, ACORN, the ACLU etc. etc. etc. who do the same?

For your information, this country was founded on JudeoChristian principles and has remained a mostly religious nation for its entire history. The people's faith cannot be extricated from our laws, values, history, heritage, or symbolism. And yet in spite of all that, those states that operated as little theocracies have all given up those theocracies with no involvement or prodding from the Federal government. And no theocracy has developed within the Federal government. And every American then and now has been completely free to believe and think and express his/her opinion in any way he or she chooses without fear of any imposed consequence.

The American people, because they are a people who value their liberties, are stubbornly resistant to any radical group, left or right, who would presume to take away those liberties.

America has been scared sh!tless in the past year watching public policy take a sharp left turn ( operative word is "sharp"). American progressivism has been exposed, particularly to those in the center who might have been a bit naive about it. They now see that it is nothing except a theory that when put into practice has hideous ramifications on our economic system. Too.......they realize that this k00ky concept of spending our way to prosperity is nothing but a sham and has NEVER, EVER been proven to be effective. Americans see a growing ball of sh!t and want to make sure it doesnt continue growing, thus, you see the unimaginable happening in places like New Jersey where a fiscal conservative is elected governor.

Obama got elected due to one reason and one reason only: the independents got hoodwinked and bamboozled into thinking the guy would govern as a DC outsider/centrist. Its quite that simple. The only people who ver thought this was about the country moving left are the internet k00ks and the miserable jerkoffs on TV with "off the air" level audiences like Keith Olbermann. ( who, by the way, looks like he got branded with a hot iron every time he comes on the air these days he's so hideously miserable watching his party implode one short year after bliss. The GOP has not been hijacked by the radical right. If anything they have been hijacked by too many promoting or consenting to a leftist socialist agenda. And that is why they became alienated from their base and lost their majority in 2006 and took another drubbing in 2008. Those center right Americans that were their base were thoroughly disgusted with them and refused to support them.

The Tea Partiers and similar movements are doing their damndest to drag them back to the right and may in fact be successful in doing so. If they can, look for a GOP landslide in November and again in 2012. But if the GOP then again fails to govern as they campaign, I think they will be toast and will disappear as a major American poltical party.

Somehow, however, we have to keep this country from sliding into a socialist abyss to the point that it loses all the qualities that have made it the great nation that it is.

The middle class is becoming extinct, and if current Republicans ever regain power, they will finish the job. You right wingers and your far right wing bullshit are the byproducts of propaganda pollution. Today, we are living in the smoking ruins of a failed revolution...the Reagan revolution.

Trickle down never happened...the wealth disparity today is identical to 1928...

Every lesson learned during the Great Depression and piece of legislation enacted to prevent that catastrophic event from happening again were basically removed, bypassed or not enforced by Republicans...

Radicals believe somehow human nature will evolve if they get their agenda enacted...it DOESN'T...

How about actually addressing why a center/right nation puts a LIBERAL in the Whitehouse, a left of center majority in the Senate, a left of center majority in the House, a left of center majority in Governorships, and a left of center majority in state legislatures.

How about you actually debate an issue and respond to that?

The center/right helped put a LIBERAL in the Whitehouse because he flat out lied on almost everything he promised to do as President. And because he was young and good looking and had a real flair for schmooze, they believed him.

I doubt they'll be so easily fooled the next time around though.

Why do you people cling to this mythology? Every single Republican candidate who lost in 2006 and 2008 lost to an opponent who was to the left of that Republican. That is hardly a message sent by the voters that the GOP isn't conservative enough; that is merely the feel good myth that the 20% on the far right believe to make themselves feel good.

Nambla is not a left wing organization, their position belongs to neither wing just its own unique fringe.

Now I do believe that most leftwingers want nothing to do with this group and definitely consider it a fringe they do not wish associated with their own ideology. But leftwing in emphasis and ideology it is.

It is also tiny--barely more than a 1000 members. It gets way more attention than it deserves. But if the Right has to be stuck with their rightwing loonies, however atypical or tiny, the Left has to be stuck with theirs.
