Imagine getting a new sense to experience the world with a that age. I can relate because my family got our first color TV when I was a teenager.

When I was a kid my friend next door was deaf and his parents spent a ton of money to get this operation so that he could hear with an earpiece when he was in his teens

Then he kept "losing" the earpiece. He liked being deaf better. Airplanes really freaked him out. The first time he heard a plane he was looking around all confused about what it was. I pointed at the airplane in the sky and he didn't believe me.

Planes still scare me when they go overhead at low altitudes. The bastards!

Deaf culture is complicated. Sometimes deaf parents want their kids to stay deaf so they don't "lose" them to the hearing world.
